85/100"I think you're fine as you are. I hope we can come to love what each of us treasures. I love you."Continue on AniListI think you're fine as you are. I hope we can come to love what each of us treasures. I love you.

The above is not a line from the manga itself however I wanted to capture what this manga made me feel love was. Hakuou Kizoku places an emphasis on an individual's role in a community. How that community can criticize the individual but also how it can support them. How an individual can feel alinated from it but come to love it by sharing it with others.
The following uses content covered in the first seven chapters (pinky promise I don't spoil anything else) ーーー
Hailing from Revontulet, a region covered in snow half the year, the male protagonist Ritzhardt travels to the city every year seeking a marriage partner willing to move to the territory he governs. After years of failed proposals, he's charmed at first sight by the retired solder Sieglinde at one of these parties and proposes to her. To which she accepts with the condition of a trial period, as she is unsure of her capabilities as a woman with much of her life spent fighting instead.
Sieg moves to Revontulet, quickly adapting to a lifestyle of hunting, gathering, and crafting. Though the villagers don't seem to welcome her nor do they get along with their own lord, Ritz. He explains the village has history with the lands they were driven out of and some aren't ready to accept foreigners quite yet. Here, we also learn, that Ritzhardt himself carries half foreign blood.
With this we have two individuals not quite sure of both themselves and their place in the world. At least for now they have a beautiful snow-covered landscape, a bountiful forest, and each other.
The rest of the manga explores Sieg and Ritz spending time together, mostly tackling the various tasks needed to prepare for the winter but also sharing meals together and attempting to bond with the people of the village. Even as Ritz doubts what his role is, he knows that at the very least he wants to share all the parts of this lifestyle he loves with Sieg. And in turn, as Sieglinde comes to enjoy this newfound home with a beautiful scenery and warm food, a sense of purpose as a leader begins to develop in Ritzhardt.
It may be hard to understand certain things on your own, but sharing experiences with another lends itself to a new perspective. In that same vein, with this couple who each have their own insecurities, they come to accept each other's way of life and what they love. And if they fall in love each other then would they also come to love themselves? It's cheesy but yeah of course :)
I reccomend this manga to anyone that likes a simple, easy romance and a cozy feeling. I didn't get to mention it earlier but the art is also perfectly simple and adorable, complementing the story. Ok that's all, go read it!

Yeyeee
100/100Very comfortable read, and high quality story and characters, aspects of romance and slice of life are well thought-outContinue on AniList!!VERY SLIGHT SPOILERS!!
Tried to keep this review as spoiler-free as I couldThis series is amazing, and is a very comfortable read to start. The slice of life aspect of the series presents a more domesticated lifestyle, exploring a range of different recipes, traditions, practices and culture. Not only that, the dynamic cast of characters we have create a more interesting and satisfying experience for the reader. Reading each character’s arc allows you to realise how the author took the time to carefully allow the character’s growth progress naturally across the story— there is also a lot you can personally learn from the characters, including skills and didactic lessons. Moreover, the art-style is breathtaking, the detailed natural landscapes and expressive behaviour and emotions of the characters is beautifully conveyed within each panel. It also holds a slight realistic aspect to the design of characters— in my opinion— making it easier for the reader to connect and understand their traits, personality and backstory. Furthermore, the author portrays the same level of dedication into the series’ romance element, creating heartfelt stories and meaningful connections between the couples (yes, there’s a second couple), where the genre of romance doesn’t obstruct the slice of life, ruin the overall theme of the story or completely contradict the character’s perspective including their values and feelings.
I also feel this is a series where you can genuinely take your time with it. There’s no need to rush through it, because sometimes it feels like the author is patting your back, saying, “hey, it’s okay to read at your own pace.”
Since personally to me, there are definitely series where if you aren’t caught up it feels like you’re missing out, or there could also be an arc where you desperately need to find out what happens next, so you’d tried to read as much as you can. Not that there’s anything wrong with these feelings but, with this series it just doesn’t feel that way in the slightest. I kept reading because I enjoyed what each chapter held, and I felt I created a meaningful connection or a genuine reason (to me), to continue reading through it. I don’t know, I just felt like I had a completely different mindset when reading this, compared to other series. And, I would honestly continue to go on and on about how amazing this series was, but there’s no better explanation than to say, it’s even better if you just start reading it yourself.
Overall, I recommend reading this series if you enjoy cooking, slice of life, romance or even if you just want something to pass the time.
