91/100A perfect first manhwa! The ending romance is top tier, but I wish it was explored more in the story.Continue on AniListI absolutely loved it! This was the very first manhwa I have ever read, and let me tell you, it set the bar incredibly high. Yes, I fully read it from the very beginning all the way to the absolute end! When you are diving into a completely new medium like manhwa for the first time, you want something that immediately hooks you and refuses to let go, and A Returner's Magic Should Be Special delivered on every single front. From the gorgeous art style to the intricate world building, it was a phenomenal gateway into the genre that kept me glued to the screen chapter after chapter.
The premise itself is just so gripping. Watching Desir Arman experience the ultimate failure of humanity, only to be thrown back in time to his academy days with the sole mission of saving everyone he cares about, instantly raises the stakes. You can feel the weight of his past experiences in every single decision he makes. Instead of just being an overpowered protagonist who blindly blasts through every obstacle, Desir uses his intelligence, his deep knowledge of magic theory, and his strategic mind to outwit his opponents. That analytical approach to battles and the magic system made the fights incredibly refreshing and satisfying to read. It was not just about raw power; it was about strategy, teamwork, and exploiting weaknesses, which made his victories feel truly earned.
Watching him rebuild his party and slowly gather the people who fought alongside him in his previous life, especially Adjest and Romantica, was the emotional core of the story. The character growth is phenomenal. You get to see them evolve from relatively inexperienced students into absolute powerhouses, all under Desir's careful guidance. The way the story handled the Shadow Worlds and the looming threat of the Shadow Labyrinth created a constant sense of tension and urgency. There was never a moment where I felt like the story was dragging or wasting my time, which is exactly why I had to read the entire thing without dropping it. The pacing was just right, balancing intense action sequences with deep, character driven moments that made you genuinely care about the fate of this world.
Now, let us talk about the conclusion and the romance, because that is what truly left a lasting impression on me. The way they used the romance to wrap everything up in a neat little bow at the end was absolutely top tier. After all the tragedy, all the grueling battles, and all the sacrifices, seeing that genuine, heartfelt romantic payoff was incredibly satisfying. It gave the ending the exact emotional weight it needed and provided a beautiful sense of closure to a story that had so much darkness and struggle in its overarching plot. The emotional beats hit perfectly, and it left me with a massive smile on my face.
However, if I had to offer one critique, my only wish is that they would have explored more of that romance during the actual reading experience. Because the payoff at the very end was so exceptionally good, it made me realize how much I was missing out on those romantic developments throughout the main journey. Do not get me wrong, the camaraderie and the deep bonds between the characters were always there, and you could feel the underlying tension and affection. But the story was so heavily focused on the impending doom, the politics of the academy, and the constant life or death battles in the Shadow Worlds, that the romantic aspects were often pushed completely to the sidelines.
I would have loved to see a few more dedicated moments of the romance blooming organically amidst the chaos. Taking a step back from the action to just let the characters breathe and explore those feelings for each other would have made that final, top tier ending hit even harder. It felt like we were given a glimpse of this incredible dynamic right at the finish line, leaving me craving just a little bit more of it in the chapters leading up to the finale. Despite that one minor wish, it does not take away from the fact that this is an absolute masterpiece in my eyes. It was the perfect introduction to manhwa, and I could not have asked for a better story to kick off my reading journey. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a complete, satisfying, and brilliantly executed adventure!
