80/100the drinks are only like half of it dude it's a bangerContinue on AniList__how can i make this review about my love for japanese alt rock :smiling_imp:__ [currently reading, 49/?] .jpg)
the gist this manga is pure cgdct at its finest. a cast of thoroughly likeable adults, all going places with each other like shopping, hiking, or drinking (obviously). it's a lovely experience if nothing else
they're all adults that might act a little immature time to time, but are all definitely mature in the end
and each character has their own weird specific niche of knowledge, which is really fun. it's fun to just read about these topics in shocking amounts of detail. music, movies, books, drinks (obviously); it's all very thorough and excellent
the art is also just strictly good. drippy character outfits; masterfully detailed locales and cars; expressions that carry more weight than words at times; it's all definitely good on a fundamental level
it's also kind of weird to sit down with? if i could liken the manga's pacing to something, it'd be an extended math rock piece. like, sometimes they just do whatever the hell they want in there. but i think it really pops off, even with how plain weird it is
i've never seen important conversations be done in the way this manga constantly does. sometimes characters will rush through talking about love and their relationships. sometimes they'll start, then stop, then start again. or sometimes a chapter will seem like it abruptly ends when you thought you were getting more
like, even with the simple gimmick of these characters becoming more honest after a drink or two, it's not enough to call it all 'reading between the lines'; the silence between characters during emotional beats can speak miles more than the beats themselves. or, even the random conversations following said beats (or, during, in multiple cases)
it's like the manga's constantly changing time signatures at its own whim, and keeping up with its clearly staggered pacing is rewarding in its own way
jinran, you'll notice, often tries to eschew all this and cuts straight to the point. she legit is the son goku of being a lesbian
another big thing in terms of this manga's readability (for me at least) is that there's a very liberal use of empty space all throughout. and it's not necessarily bad! again, the art is good enough that you know there easily could be backgrounds to supplement these parts
i have to think that it's just to keep focus on the characters—whether that's a fun, random conversation they have, or little moments when they're alone in their little world. but i cannot lie this is kinda conjecture
hey go listen to mass of the fermenting dregs just like with alt rock music, sometimes you just get to a part and it just feels so incomprehensible. as if you got 3 dudes tuning their instruments over a drum machine and they go yup that's the song. but you ruminate, maybe you linger on a certain part. and you listen more, and you digest it. and turns out it's actually pretty good
admittedly, still a little difficult to keep up with it at times, but excellent nonetheless. here's to you, winning strip by sheena ringo
8/10 and im STILL waiting for the anime's Flame on the Distant Door from episode 3 to release on spotify, by the way
