70/100Enjoy your tour through some silly, spooky Halloween fun!Continue on AniListSo, The Gregory Horror Show franchise is a charming little curiosity from the turn of the century… And I mean directly from the turn of the century, as in the lifespan of this series stretches from 1999 to 2001, if you don’t count the video game or the merchandise. Or the board game. And some other weird stuff.
Gregory Horror does not look like your standard anime. It has a very unique style, completely animated in CGI, with characters who look like the love children of Minecraft zombies and funko pops. I’m talking giant blocky heads on pyramid bodies with tiny little arms and legs. And I know, that sounds like the least scary aesthetic in existence, but despite its limitations, it can get very dark, and very spooky.
This is the kind of show that you see once as a child, then you carry it with you in the back of your mind as some weird, messed up memory that keeps coming back to you in bits of pieces as you struggle to figure out if it was actually real. Gregory Horror feels like the kind of show that was designed to become lost media, like Cracks or Clockman, and I’m convinced that the only reason this didn’t happen is because the people making the series were extremely committed to pushing it as a successful multi-media project, with DVDs and other assorted merchandise flowing out the wazoo.
Granted, this does not describe my experience with the franchise, I found it through the giant used DVD section at FYE back in the day, but it is a highly accessible franchise to view for yourself, especially with the entire thing being available on youtube… Even the one short series that never got dubbed or physically released, which I am reviewing today.
This is actually the last Gregory Horror review I have to do, because when I came back to reviewing five years ago, I decided to review one entry of it every October. I skipped last year because I had a theme going, but since this year’s theme didn’t go as well as I’d hoped, I’m changing course a little bit. Instead of reviewing the Sankarea OVA that nobody remembers, I’m going to review the Gregory Horror special that one or two really nerdy millennials remember!
When I first heard about the gallery tour, my expectations were admittedly low. I saw the first minute of episode one, assumed it was just going to be a POV of myself following Gregory through an art gallery, and that was going to be it. Whoopdedoo. Plus, it's the only piece of Gregory Horror media to not be acknowledged on the franchise's Wikipedia page. Now though, upon actually sitting down to watch it, the first part is… A little more fun than that? My assumption was technically correct, with Gregory leading you on a tour showcasing portraits of the most popular recurring side characters, but to his credit, he does take things up a notch by actually interacting with them all.
The interactions in the first part are cute, and they’re a little creative. The portraits either talk to Gregory, saying things that are true to their characters, or they just attack him. One portrait throws a knife at Gregory, which misses, hits the wall, and somehow makes the wall bleed profusely. Another uses a hand axe to actually hit Gregory in the back of the head, an amusing nod to the first episode of season 1, which he barely notices as he walks away.
I would like to pause at this point to state that if you’re not familiar with the series itself, and you’re just coming in blind, this special is not going to be a fun experience for you. It is basically just three episodes of fanservice for people who have already seen and enjoyed the source material. If you know the characters, this is really charming and creative.
This is also quite possibly the best showing for Gregory as a character, as he is generally a villain in the series… He is often the architect of the protagonist’s torment… So it’s pretty funny to see him turning an antagonistic eye towards the paintings he interacts with, for once bantering with them instead of you, and it’s especially satisfying watching them constantly turn the tables on him.
I won’t spoil too much about parts two and three, but suffice to say they do up the ante. Part 2 is pretty much the same as part 1, except with better animation, better direction, more interactions, more insanity, and more creativity. It is a step up in every way I can think of. Part 3 abandons the painting gallery structure entirely, and moves to a much larger and more visually stunning location, an actual museum, where we get to visits exhibits that are far more elaborate than mere paintings.
The new interactions in part three are also so, so damn memorable. Some of the best bits involve Angel dog and Devil dog arguing over Gregory’s plans for you, and an extended sequence where Gregory unmasks and tries to steal your soul, taking full, glorious advantage of the POV camera in a nightmarish chase sequence. It’s just so damn good, I don’t know what else to say.
When I first decided to do this review, I wasn’t looking forward to it, per se. I figured it was going to be a slog to get through… Just a glorified DVD extra that somehow got its own site listing and youtube upload due to association despite having no reason to exist… And that I’d be lucky if I had anything to say about it. I had no other idea how to close out my 2026 October reviews, and this seemed like an easy addition to the list, and that getting through it would at least serve a purpose for the sake of completionism.
What I actually got was way, way better than I was expecting. I would honestly say this is the second best Gregory Horror anime, right after season three. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying you should track this down right now and watch it blind as your introduction to the series… You should definitely start with season one, big surprise there… But if you have seen at least the first two seasons, I’d highly recommend seeking it out. It’s a nice little chunk of silly, spooky Halloween fun.
I give Gregory Gallery Tour a 7/10
