DESCRIPTION
After twelve years of playing his favorite MMORPG game, Momonga logs in for the last time only to find himself transported into its world playing it indefinitely. Throughout his adventures, his avatar ascends to the title of Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown.
Once prosperous but now on the brink of ruin, The Sacred Kingdom enjoyed years of peace after construction of an enormous wall protecting them from neighboring invasions. But, one day this comes to an end when the Demon Emperor Jaldabaoth arrives with an army of villainous demi-humans.
Fearing invasion of their own lands, the neighboring territory of the Slane Theocracy is forced to beg their enemies at the Sorcerer Kingdom for help. Heeding the call, Momonga, now known as the Sorcerer King Ains Ooal Gown, rallies the Sorcerer Kingdom and its undead army to join the fight alongside the Sacred Kingdom and the Slane Theocracy in hopes to defeat the Demon Emperor.

20/100Insipid, uninspired and boringContinue on AniListIn short, it's shit. Overlords strengths are two-fold: it's a slightly above average power fantasy and the dynamics between Ainz and his underlings are fun to watch.
This movie manages to miss the mark entirely on both fronts. The vast majority of the story focuses on the usual cardboard cutout "characters" introduced as part of a new arc. Neia is a plank of wood. No characterization, no likability, no charisma. Just an empty, vacuous plot device that exists for Ainz to have someone to talk to in his limited scenes. If you expect to learn more about her other than the fact that she's good at archery and she wants to follow in her mothers footsteps then you're going to be disappointed. We've reached the point in anime where people working on a major, popular IP feel 3 sentences in a throwaway scene by a character we never even see again are enough characterization for what amounts to the deuteragonist of the story.
The other supporting character introduced is Remedios, a shouty, angry, rude, insolent, mean twat with perhaps the worst case of resting bitch face in all of anime. I'm not sure what the point of this character is exactly. She's right to doubt and be suspicious of Ainz's motivations as his intentions are exceedingly obvious. So it seems like the goal was to make her as unlikable as possible in order for the viewer to continue being okay with Ainz going full genocidal maniac? Who cares.
Albedo and Demiurge are barely in the movie and have almost no scenes with Ainz. So in essence the movie boils down to 2 hours of generic, boring dialogue between Ainz and Neia and Remedios being all angry and shouty. What exactly is supposed to be enjoyable about that?
The overarching plot is the same thing you've seen over and over again. Antihero manufactures crisis that only he can resolve so as to win over the favor of the people. There's no political intrigue, there's no tension because we know Ainz is invincible, there is no attempt to make you care about the fate of the people that will be ultimately affected by the plot. In summary, it's the same old "Ainz is super smart and powerful and everyone else is braindead and weak" slop you've gotten used to. To top it off, there is a random ass side quest that takes up a solid 20 minutes that is even more trite and insufferable than the main plot. This sort of thing isn't as egregious pacing wise in the normal serialized format but there are different rules when you make a movie. If you just stitch together 6 episodes and call it a day you get this, a sack of terribly paced garbage.
The art and animation is the same mediocre standard as the rest of Overlord. If you expected or hoped that a theatrical release would mean a bigger budget and more effort put into it, you'd be wrong. There are essentially only 2 action scenes in the entire 2+ hour runtime of any note and they're both insipid and uninspired.
Don't bother wasting your time with this one.

100/100Not for shonen loversContinue on AniListOverlord is not for shonen lovers. If you are looking for fights in Overlord, you will be disappointed. If you think this movie is boring, overlord is not for you. Overlord is not about Ainz. It's the closest anime to Game of Thrones. Political intrigue and character development are the strenghts of Overlord. Overlord is not a power fantasy. Overlord won many writing awards for a reason.
Ainz is not living a dream but a nightmare. He is condemned to be alone because by nature he is a horrible human being who can not form connection. Ainz is a mad scientist. He is extremely apathetic and he views everything as experiments even his guardians. This is the guy who did not hesitate to edit Albedo. Ainz does not know what love is or he has a twisted view of love.
In Overlord, Wars are constant. There is no justice. The concept of justice is explored in this movie with Ainz, Remedios, Neia and Demiurge and the conclusion is the winner is the one who is just. Overlord is a pessimistic book. There is no good guys in Overlord. Even the supposed good guys like the queen Calca enable xenophobia. Brain was a slave trader. All the characters are morally gray in Overlord. There is a lot of nuance.
Even people as straight forward as Remedios and Neia have layers to them. Remedios is not only someone who is angry. She is someone who feels deep guilt and regret and is having a severe break down in front of our eyes. Neia is a complex character looking for justice in her life. Neia is not the naive little girl. She herself is suffering another kind of trauma. She is also a victim of abuse and looking for companionship. This is why she is blind to the acts of Ainz.
Ainz is one of the best written characters of all time not only in anime but in fiction.
Maruyama uses Ainz in the story as an unreliable narrator. This kind of writing is tricky because it can be confusing if not done well. Not many authors can use an unreliable narrator well. Ainz is lying to us throughout the story so there are still people who believe Ainz is evil because of the system or because of Nazarick, lmao. Ainz is well aware of the atrocities of his servants. He even encourages them because he "loves" them. Ainz is well aware of what Demiurge is doing and of the happy farm , lmao. The difference is he feels nothing from this. He conducts experiments himself.Ainz is a villain. He walked past dead baby corpses in his old life. He was always this cold. He is the worst main character and the best at the same time. The plot of this movie is how he is going to use the traumas of Remedios and Neia to establish supremacy. Because Ainz is smart, he learned from history it's not by fighting that he will be able to rule with an Iron fist. He has to brainwash the people, make them willingly submit to avoid rebellions and chaos.
Overlord is one of the most unpredictable shows of all time. If anyone tells me he predicted Neia , Demiurge, Remedios, the paladins and Ainz's actions in this movie, I will call absolutely bullshit. There are characters acting behind the scenes. How can you guess their moves ? Ainz himself has plans the viewer doesn't even know till he reveals it.
Overlord is a world building show with Ainz as a recurring character. There is no main character in Overlord. Ainz can disappear when the author wants to or make him a side character like in the movie which makes it great. The movie covers what is unanimously considered by All Overlord fans to be the best arc of Overlord and Ainz has a minor role. If you did not like this movie, you never knew what made Overlord great in the first place.
This is the arc culminating to the peak of the series where Political intrigue and tension is at an all time high. If you did not like the movie, it's better to give up now because from now on , there will be no longer any fights in Overlord. It will be dialogue heavy between multiple characters in Season 5 till the end. We are finally reaching the best parts. Dandadan and Jujutsu Kaisen lovers, it will be boring for you. Me, I can't wait for Season 5.

95/100This was something, I don't know how to explain but this was exactly what Overlord needed.Continue on AniListStory
The story started pretty "casually" and was quite funny. Anime watchers likely knew the ending even before the movie came out, giving the filmmakers a pretty hard setup to deliver. But the story was really good, had its low points (and wasn't perfect). However, there were just so many good points that they negated the low points. It's a solid (6/5).
Characters
Baraja and Remedios (along with CZ) were the main characters; the others were just "wheels" to build them. I hope people finally learn that Momonga is not the main character (MC) in this series. He's just a "wheel" to move the story forward – this series features many main characters, and it's not shoujo or shonen anime. The characters were really enjoyable and interesting (5/5).
Baraja
She started slow and timid before turning full fanatic. I love her! Her growth was spontaneous but also understandable, for example, when she "fainted" and Momonga resurrected her – it was a clear turning point to full fanaticism. I love how expressive she was throughout the movie and showed several different faces/expressions.
Remedios
She was initially a bit stiff. I was surprised by how she tried to block Momonga from joining the first fight because of the agreement. That was really weird and showed she wanted to honor the agreement, adding a little more depth that I liked. Otherwise, I think she was just another "wheel" to move the story forward.
CZ
Even though she came late in the story, it was fun and nice to see her. I love how emotionless she was for pretty much the whole movie, but when they were talking about runes during the fight, she started pushing "runes..." and acting, which was nice to see and really fun. But the best thing was her her smile at the end.
Animation
Sadly, it seems 3D animation is there to stay in this series. I was pretty happy they kept it on a higher quality most of the time, although there were few times when I was ready to stop watching. The 2D animation, however, was really well done with some really good quality touches; you could see they focused even more on smaller details now. There are some things still to fix (4/5).
Audio / Music (No Voice Acting)
The sound design was really well done and very immersive. Sometimes, some audio felt a little off, but most of the time, there was that "complete" feel. It felt like I was in the rooms and places when listening. The music was also very fitting and, as always, if it's not distracting, it's really good. In some places, I hoped for a little more "oomph" in the music, but the choices were made and this was selected – it's good, really good, but felt something was missing. Still, it was really enjoyable (4/5).
Voice Acting
Superb! No corners were cut in the voice acting for anything or anyone. I love Baraja – she was the timid character at first, and you could hear it in her voice, but by the end, she had turned full fanatic, and you could hear that really well in her voice too. Remedios was also a nice character; she was turned into an "antagonist" in this adaptation and played her role well, voiced believably, with her voice fitting her really well. Other characters also got good voice actors, though I won't list everyone here. Really good (5/5).
TL;DR
This was something special, I don't know how to explain but it was exactly what The Overlord needed. They showed that the world has much more to it than just fighting, and it delivered a really awesome worldbuilding moment.
