60/100Don't read past chapter 11. Let it end as a anti-climactic tragedy. It doesn't get better, only more ambivalent.Continue on AniListThere isn’t much to say. This story is grueling, and mostly absurd. The cross dressing is minimal, but welcomed. I'm personally a fan cross-dressing for it's radical look at femininity for AMABs, while not being about transitioning to a woman, rather embracing the parts of you that coalesce with masculinity and femininity as you grow. This makes that complication with identity more interesting for me. The theme often explores cross-dressing for the boy you like, that appears straight, and it's no different Kyou.
Kyou is a great part of this story. he is actually pretty brave, he's proud of himself, has high self worth. Not afraid to be gay, but mainly because his father is the only source of light in it for him. His father embraced his uniqueness. Kyou's friends were accepting of the chaos and wanted to help him thrive. This is later proven when his friend beats Kogami's ass. Riki was not only his reason for seeking validation, but also his reason to not hide from the world. This is why ultimately Kyou won, and that's the only reason I'm semi-satisfied. This story ruins it though.
Riki’s trauma relating to his father made the fear of women trope actually bearable and interesting. However, his ending is bleak. He fails to connect to people outside of the twins that genuinely care for him.
Anything regarding his determination to act was swallowed by Kogami.
He just fails to think for himself. Like, critically. "Who did this?", "Why did this happen?", "Who really are you?". He doesn't ask these questions. At least not often. He's likeable, nonetheless. Mostly, because Kyou keeps it interesting.Something vile happening is normal for this manga. This manga glosses over SA so casually. Like when Kyou rapes Riki by giving him fellatio while he's sleeping... Who writes this kind of shit without further delving into that.
The author is so mysterious, their twitter(s) are suspended, they only participated in a ecchi anthology years ago. It isn't clear to me if this was canceled or not. I digress.
After Kyou dies ‘off screen’, it just got even crazier. It should’ve ended as a tragedy, where Riki is then consoled by the one friend who cared about him. Instead Kyou’s evil ass sister gets to ruin the lives of everyone around her.Kogami is just a terrible human being. Like Boy's Abyss level evil. I cannot read the sex she has with Riki to be consensual either I'm not sure what devil spawned in her as a child. There isn't trauma to explain it. What makes it worse... is the obsession around Kyou caused her to make Kyou's death negligible, alienating, and disturbing. With absolutely no closure. Not any that I can accept at least.
It’s a story that you might never forget. But mainly for how disappointing it is. If you read past chapter 11, you will have felt the time invested reading this shit wasn’t worth it. It ended with the most brain fog I have ever had. R.I.P. Kyou
