DESCRIPTION

"Turkey" is a bowling term for scoring three consecutive strikes.

Mai, a second-year student and captain of the Ikkokukan High School Bowling Club, is a genius who can't seem to win a match. Whenever she scores a Turkey, she mysteriously follows it up with an unyielding split—the Snake Eyes.

One day, Rina, the club’s only first-year member, confronts her "You’re doing it on purpose, aren’t you?"

"You’re running away from winning. But I want to win. If you have no intention of winning, I’ll quit."

This needed a second throw...
The whole concept of this from the start was about a second chance, the second throw, If anyone who has ever played bowling, you would know you are given a second throw if you failed to knock down all 10 pins on the first go around. If you managed to knock them all on the first throw, it is a strike, but if you manage to get it on the second throw, it is called a spare. Now a strike isn't the most easy thing which is always nice to have that second chance where you failed the first time.
Now if you think about that logic, yes it does sound honestly nice and sweet. It does have a great life lesson to that as well, that life isn't about how successful you manage to do things the first time around, because truth be told... we'll fail more than we will succeed. The idea is to get back up and go again, without giving up. It's what Rocky said "It's not about how hard you can hit, it's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward"

So, with that idea in there, we get a chance to tell a great coming of age, overcoming your hardship and your struggle, having great valuable life lessons and growing together. And to make it even better, why not just put CGDCT in there, because we know this worked in many other shows, especially one of the greatest anime in "A Place Further than the Universe."

We have a recipe for success right here on our hand. We have a girl who has lost her parents in a tragic accident and another girl trying to find her place and etc... each girl having their own hardship and identity crises to deal with. And we have the most important setup, they are all on a team together. And you know what else they have? The first freaking anime about bowling!

We have so many other sports anime but how many have been about bowling? None, this is a rare chance to give a spot light on a popular sport that many love to just do for fun. It's one of those you don't need to be good to be able to enjoy. And it's one that you can do by yourself or with friends. So, this was nice to see an anime spotlight on this sport that's well known.

I heard about this anime for a while now and been waiting in huge anticipation. Since I am part of a bowling team and was so excited to see an anime about a sport I play. And I waited and waited and finally here we are in Summer 2025... "LET'S GO!" I get ready, put on the first episode, your usual drama and stuff... animation is pretty decent, the girls design are okay... so far, so good, I am vibing with this show...

We get towards the freaking end... BAM! Lightning and Thunder strikes... we're not going to be no dang sports anime, we're going to be an ISEKAI!!!

Boy my disappointment was immeasurable... after all this waiting for this anime to just be another trash isekai...

But you know, here am I coping that hey maybe it's just going to be 3-4 episode and we'll go back to the real world... as I wait and wait... I started to see that I was dealing with Stockholm Syndrome. I was lying to myself that it will be alright, that we'll get through this, we'll become a normal anime again... but weeks go by and I die more and more inside... that I'm just at the point that... there is no return... I'm already too far in... and by the end... a part of me die along with this anime...

I kind of wish I can go back in time again and tell myself, save yourself time, don't watch this crap... watch something else... but nope... so save yourself time, don't watch this unless you want a braindead anime that fails to be a trope or parody... instead it try to take itself seriously and fails to be anything at all...

Sorry, just me ranting for most of the review...

Um animezinho legal que me surpreendeu o quanto ele é e não é sobre boliche ao mesmo tempo kkkkkkkk

Não sei falar muito se gostei ou não gostei dele, fiquei meio indiferente pelas coisas acontecendo que tem muita coisa boa logo seguida de umas partes esquisita que até se cancelam.

Primeiro episódio dá um jumpscare virando isekai, o resto da história fica meio episódico, mas com umas coisas bacanas, o que me odiei foi pelo final eles só terem feito aquilo chato de voltar para voltar de novo kkkkkkkk. Acho incrível a quantidade de história que tava gostando até aquele ponto só são estragadas por causa disso, o que mais me broxou com isso que é o maior exemplo de ter acontecido foi o The Wonderland, que tava amando ele até ignorarem toda a progressão para terminar de qualquer jeito, coisa que é super comum infelizmente

A história começa me lembrando muto dos bons e velhos momentos no GTA 4 que para ganhar no boliche era a coisa mais fácil, era sempre só ficar num lugar específico e ficava pegando Turkey! Sem parar e logo aleatoriamente taca as protagonistas numa era que elas convenientemente conhecem muito bem no finalzinho do primeiro episódio, confundindo todo mundo que tava assistindo, inclusive eu kkkkkkkkkk

Achei muito legal como que exploraram os personagens, iria preferir que fosse mais junto, mas pelo menos é compensado pelo fato que elas são tão completas

Muito engraçado a Nikaidou Nanase falar em código e a Ichinose Sayuri ter que explicar kkkkkkkk pena que é um negócio meio sem tradução

Muito estranho a Anzu, colocaram uma mulher de 62 anos para dublar a porra de uma criança kkkkkkkk

Foda que é difícil falar muito sobre os personagens, eu gostei muito deles, mas coisa que mais gostei foi as caras que eles fazem e se for falar de um específico é aquilo de só ter que reescrever a história no review kkkkkkkkkk

Os designs dos personagens são bem bonitinhos e tal, mas oque mais me impressionou foi o Gore kkkkkk. Legal que eu tava assistindo psycho-pass que é todo censurado e daí esse anime que era para ser de boliche tem mais "gore" que ele

A animação tem suas partes, mas não é o forte, as cenas de boliche sem bem bonitas, mas quando não é isso é quase sempre uma cena de conversa um a um, então o máximo que acontece é a câmera virando um para o outro. Falando nisso, o ep 11 teve uma animação bem boa, acho que o com melhor animação do anime e foi bem legal, junto com o ep final, só que uma pena que meio que o anime termina na metade do último episódio kkkkkkkk

A opening no segundo episódio só confunde mais ainda o que o final do primeiro episódio já confundiu, literalmente tacando umas "curveball" do caralheo kkkkkkk, bem bacana ela em si e legal como no episódio 9 ela é diferente

Pela opening eu achava que os pais da Mai tinham morrido numa casa pegando fogo, que estranho falar que eles morreram num acidente de carro

Uma pena que o pacing é bem acelerado, toda hora eu acho que deu algum problema com o player porque só pula de um lado para o outros kkkkkkkk e que loucura o episódio 6 em, mostra bem como o anime trabalha bem os personagens e dá muito mais insight sobre eles e o mundo

Uma coisa que ele acho que ganha um recorde é se não foi o mais rápido a repetir o nome dele dentro dele, ele tá em algum top. Foi falado nos 2 minutos do primeiro episódio

Foda que só fiquei me irritando com coisa aleatória e acabei que fiquei tacando esse Review para o lado sem parar e acabei que tendo que escrever sem me lembrar muito do anime, já que assisti ele enquanto tava lançando eu já não tava muito conectado com ele e ainda esperei para começar a escrever sobre ele kkkkkkk, pelo menos o mair ponto que quis falar, que era do negócio de ele "voltar para voltar de novo" que acabou ignorando bastante parte legal que podia ter sido evoluída para ter um final bem rushado para deixar metade de um episódio como um "plot-twist" que não importava tanto, mas pelo menos fez bastante sentido com uma parte mais no começo do anime... a "correria" que foi um plot point só tacado para poder voltar no final kkkkkkkkkkk

Turkey! - The review

I never took anything this stupid so seriously. So... I am going to try and do justice to this show, because I cannot believe the reasons people are trashing this show for.

"In bowling, there's always a second throw."
This is not just a repeated quote from the show, but it's also a life lesson that they're giving us, opening our eyes with. It carries with us the whole time and the story's conclusion is so perfectly sweet, much like goumi.

Isekai??? Then why is it entertaining?

No, this show is a hidden isekai. In most isekai shows, you know exactly what they're selling you. A guy dying and being transported into a magic world where underage girls see him as a god. A girl dying and becoming a game character, ready to save a hot guy or her waifu from certain death.

Turkey is nothing of the sorts.

We start out at a bowling alley, where a group of classmates has a different relationship to the sport. Blondie Nozomi seems annoyed to even be there, Sayuri is scared of any kind of conflict, Nanase seems too good for everyone, and Rina and Mai are at it again.
The cool as ice Rina does not seem to understand why lucky-go-happy Mai cannot get pass "Turkey", calling her out on not wanting to win.

As you get into the drama... suddenly the girls are transported into Sengoku period. This is a time slip/time travel anime. Not an isekai.

That being said - even if you see this is a comedy, parody or historical drama, you will not be bored. Because what Turkey does, they do exceptionally well.

Characters, their backstories and message

Usually in large characters show it's hard to balance screentime and importance. Characters come and go, they are either very important or they're just one episode ponies.
Not here. Here, everyone has a "life meaning".

Let's start with Rina. Rina brings in the first drama - the drama of "I am going to seem entitled because I have a beef with the one everyone loves" that can get on your nerves from the start. But she is a great example of why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.
Now those who have seen this show will know what Rina's deal is. And to those I say - yes, it is not something unique. But sometimes leaning into something that is well know can be your biggest strength.

They do however lean into new tropes as well. As can be seen with Sayuri. The girl I totally feel for. I too was struggling with my own strength a lot in the past, and I needed someone and myself to see that it is not freakish, but it is indeed a strength. With that, she was a real human.
Fighting for your values, keeping up with your moral compass... and then understanding what happens when it's challenged.

I do not want to give out too much. These two girls and Anzu, Suguri and Nozomi are fighting themselves and their imagine. The show does a brilliant job at pacing their stories and giving them time to learn, get better and understand their world a bit better.

Mai, Nanase and Akebi are fighting their family problems and problems in family. Those are not only holding them back, but also preventing them from seeing what reality is. It's deep, touching, you want to cheer on them and you are watching with held breath what will come out of their stories.

And that's not all! Natsume and Sumomo are showing us how important freedom is, and why you should fight for it and yourself! While they're also presenting different types of grief and dealing with it.

Emotionally, Turkey is insanely strong and heavy story, that you would not expect within the comedy genre it carries with itself.

It's so stupid, it's good

At moments, Turkey is extremely hilarious.

Getting transported into the past during bowling. Family secrets being quite ridiculous, excused with sob stories. Going back in time because of highschooler's logic... Periods in the past, not being able to use tissues after peeing...
Mixing goumi tree and gummy bears. Using bowling as escape from dangerous situations...

This show does a great way at mixing funny, dramatic and breathtaking. Which is just a huge plus.

Overall quality

There is nothing, besides plot points and ridiculous choices, that would take points off or ruin this show. It's on your own likes, dislikes and taste to decide how well you'll rate Turkey.
But it's definitely not less than 7(which is average, in this case).

The art and artstyle (and character design) is simple, but effective. Color coding works wonders.
The music, openings and endings are bops with story that they're telling (please, pay close attention to them).
The animation is smooth and not lazy, they're being smart about the way they're animating background characters.
The bowling animations are not intrusive to eye, I couldn't tell you anything bad about it.
And the serious moment, where they play with animation style was a risk that payed off.

There is nothing else to add. Do watch it. It is so worth it.

Conclusion: it's definitely recommended!
