80/100As a standalone story, it's good. But also means its limitedContinue on AniListTears of the Azure Sea follows Rimuru's group going on vacation and haivng a fun time of their lives. However, one of the members in the group named Gobta, runs into a girl named Yura. Apparently, Yura needs help because she is being chased down by the Kingdom of Kaien men. She has the dragon flute which can awaken the Water Dragon that protects the Kingdom of Kaien. The chancellor and minister, Djeese, and Dojon are looking for Yura in order to use her to get the power of the Water Dragon. They will use the Water Dragon to rule the world.
When I watched this in theater, it seemed it wasn't that popular. There weren't many seats that were taken, only a few have went to see this movie. I also went with my brother who has never seen the Tensura series so I was also curious if whether this was good to a non-Tensura fan.
In the movie, you would think the story would focus on Rimuru but that is actually wrong. The movie focuses on Gobta as the main character instead, andhe also develops a romance with the girl named Yura. I think that this was a good choice because the movie diverts from just having Rimuru be the hype and aura merchant like in the last movie, Scarlet Bond. They also avoided a Charybdis situation because the big monster, the Water Dragon also couldn't be defeated very easily just by overpowering it. The Demon Lords had trouble facing it and I think this nicely added actual tension and stakes within the series (that Season 4 doesn't have jkjk). Having Gobta become the MC also was a good decision because it allowed him to have hype moment that isn't just built up from being overpowered. It was a hype moment that was built up as frustration, and anger that the viewers feel towards the villains, and seeing Gobta punch the big bad villain was just very cool. For slime fans, I think this movie was a good experience, and for non slime fans, my brother said it was also good as well.
Now coming from a slime fan, lets talk about the limitations of the writing in this movie.
From the moment I started this movie, I already knew it would end in nothing burger. I mean it's a non canon movie like the last movie that released. However, I think they managed to do pretty well with the story despite it being limited. How is it limited? Well the story wasn't made in mind for the continuity of the series, it is meant to be a standalone action story that uses the world of Tensura in order to convey it. So that means that even though the Water Dragon was a concept made by Fuze, it will never appear in the anime. This was kind of a bummer because the world building that happens within these movies could've enrichened the world of Tensura. Theres also the fact the Yura and Gobta was forced to end in tragedy. This is because that in the series, Gobta will probably never find a love interest and just adding Yura as Gobta's wife/girlfriend would contradict the series itself. Thus, they had it end in tragedy in order to preserve the main series timeline. However I also would say she was handled a bit better than I thought. It is the fact that she turned out to have a soul connection to the "Water Dragon" and after the Water Dragon got slained by Rimuru and his party, she commited suicide to I guess reincarnate it? It should still be said, I think this decision was forced by the writers in order to maintain the continuity for the series of the show itself, and they couldn't actually develop any romance.Final Thoughts :
So of course, this story is meant to be stand-alone. It can be enjoyed without seeing the anime of Tensura at all, as seen with my brother managing to like it. It was a good experience when in theaters. The storytelling was also an improvement from the last movie, Scarlet Bond. However, for slime fans, they may feel the writing was limited. For non slime fans, they could enjoy it because they wouldn't know how it would be limited since they haven't seen the show at all. To take in everything I said, I still would recommend this movie, it was still a fun experience regardless, and the flaws that I had with it are only very backseated and didn't wreck my enjoyment at all.
