  After having us cheer for a victim of abuse to get rescued, this show wants us to cheer for one to get punished.

  This review will have spoilers as I am trying to dissect the work, but it is not a play by play and it assumes that you have seen (and remember) the content in question

  I will never understand that this was the ending of My Happy Marriage. A show that at its core is a story about a young woman in an awful circumstance wanting to have a better life and getting one by pure happenstance. I do want to make my moral position clear coming into this discussion. I do think that being the victim of any kind of trauma does not give anyone the right to inflict trauma and pain on others. I do understand that this is a core concept that is being depicted in these special episodes. However, I do think that there was a lot more nuance in the situation depicted than the show wanted to contend with. And in fact, I think that the way the show delt with the nuance situation it presented left a bad taste in my mouth.

  These last episodes are depicted the culmination of Miyo's arc to self-fullilment (sort-of) with the marriage and life she has always wanted and (the show tells us) deserves. And yet, I started to have a bad feeling where this was going when we have our first interaction with the unhappy lady and Kiyoka in his role as commander. She asks for his help with her abusive family. She shows him her bruises, cuts, and bites, and begs for him to tell her what to do. He coldly brushes her off and tells her to find someone else to help her. What?! This is supposed to be our hero. This is supposed to be the equivalent of the police in this reality?! This is unacceptable and when the show wants me to keep going as if this was right and just, I was flabbergasted.

  We are told at some point later that Kiyoka knew then that she had cursed Miyo and that's why he was so cold. But I don't care about that! This is just as if we had a kid push another kid in the playground and the innocent kid got scrapped knees but we find out that the bully kid was being abused at home. Sure, we don't praise him for pushing the other kid, but we DO HELP HIM OUT OF HIS ABUSIVE SITUATION! No one deserves to be abused no matter what they have done! The cruel way in which Kiyoka pushed this woman's genuine concerns aside make me hate him.

  I get that the mentality of "how come she has it all and I have nothing" is a bad state for anyone to be in and it is often used as an excuse to perpetrate horrific crimes (which are inexcusable). However, there is a certain amount of blame that can be put on a system that didn't help the vulnerable when the vulnerable snap. This felt like a vulnerable person snapping and not just an entitled person being evil and the fact that this show has the gall to treat it as the latter made my blood boil. I'm not saying that she would have been justified in killing Miyo (a complete innocent) or in harming others, but I do think we need to have a more nuance conversation -- especially in the show about an abused woman finding happiness -- about her actual circumstances than "you know this was all your fault, right?" Which is a line someone actually says to her. Disgusting.

  I couldn't have ended with a more bitter taste in a show that started with a lot of promise.
