DESCRIPTION
Flum has been chosen by God to be in the hero's party despite having stats of zero across the board. All she has is the "Reversal" ability that she still doesn't fully understand. Predictably, she proves useless in battle, but she refuses to give up and continues to do all she can for the party. Her partymate Jean, a genius and renowned sage, picks on her at every opportunity and eventually sells her off into slavery. Even as a slave, she's treated as incompetent and persecuted, and ultimately thrown to monsters as bait for her master's entertainment. Flum is left with two options: take up the cursed sword that inevitably brings death to its wielder, or be eaten by monsters. The moment she chooses to fight back is when the "Reversal" of her life begins...

REVIEWS

WeatherReport
50/100A seemingly mid show that suddenly becomes good towards the end of the seasonContinue on AniListThis review contains spoilers
Roll Over and Die started off as just another "kicked out of hero party" show and stays that way for the most part. You got the usual deal with everyone being dicks to the main girls and them going around with their usual adventuring, alongside some nice SoL. Flum and Milkit's relationship is pretty cute. The last 3 eps however, saw a significant quality increase that banks on previously established plot threads to become something much bigger than what it seemed at first.
First was the Ink twist, a blind girl with eyes sealed shut. It was previously established that her heart doesn't work and she was taking medicine, which seemed to be the treatment for it. You had these eye-monster things running around town alongside. Ep 10 reveals that these eyes actually were coming out of Ink the whole time. This makes a ton of sense because Ink had refused to elaborate upon where she came from, so this leading up to her being a church experiment, along with her sealed eyes, feels inevitable in retrospect. The reason her heart wasn't beating was because she had already been turned inhuman, and the medicine was literally just to keep her powers in check.
Ep 11 showed us with the Dein fight that people experimented with Origin powers have a core instead of a heart, as previously hinted at by Eterna when she inspected Ink. This leads to Flum deducing that the eyeballs are in fact not under Dein's control. This is also helped by the ep 4 flashback emphasizing Neigass' surprise at Flum breaking the core, now cementing that Flum's reversal is the one thing that negates Origin powers. What Dein said at the end really stuck. About how Flum was that close to ending up like Dein, with their situations being similar. But while Flum got to have good and supportive friends, Dein went into the Church. Obviously they aren't 1:1 comparable since Dein just sucks, but it's an interesting parallel to bring up nonetheless.
Ep 12 greatly increased my opinion of the whole show and showed how unexpectedly thought out it was the whole time. We are given proper lore for Origin and how this world came around, the real reason behind the hero party's formation in the first place, Neigass' reason to be in Anichidley, the mysterious monsters Flum previously fought, and the Demons' actual role in all of this. Previously, it was said that the demons aren't actually at odds with the humans or kill them, something that stuck with me. They actually are the ones to protect the seal on origin, and the ones that attacked Maria/Sara's village were conspiring with the church. Like damn... the scale of this world and plot has been set way higher than I estimated.
Still don't wanna rate it too highly because it took a damn while to really sell me on itself and the characters themselves are mainly ok at best, but if it ever gets a second season, I will definitely be there.

70/100A really good anime dragged by a faulty adaptation.Continue on AniList__INTRODUCTION__ Roll Over and Die isn't perfect. I want to start with this base, being clear that there's some vital flaws to talk about. But, even in that roughness around the edges, I believe there's beauty in it. Since there will be people who's peeping the reviews to see if this anime is worth watching, I'll be breaking down my points spoiler free, so anyone can reads what an anonymous fan thinks about. __SUMMARY AND POSITIVES__ Roll Over and Die follows Flum Apricott, a chosen hero with the total of zero stats, and an unknown ability named "Reversal", one not even her nor her peers know nothing about. Just as I did, you might be thinking it's a pretty common and typical setting for a fantasy story, and it is. But despite that, the first episode contributes to demonstrate just how special it can be, expanding the main heroine's ability as its main gimmick and continuing from there. It's not the most original world or setting, I must say, but the potential is there and the author knows where to exploit it. This is just a very superficial way to talk about the world this anime presents us, however. People may criticize it for how basic it is or that it doesn't really do anything groundbreaking, and don't get me wrong; it's true. But in that simple reach, it's able to achieve more than an ambitious story that doesn't know where to expand. So, to summarize it, there's beauty in its simple nature. YURIBAIT, YURISLOP, OR YURIGEM? But, if you're like me, you're peeping this anime because you've heard it's 2026 winter season's yuri. And so, if you're coming from that very angle, I recommend it a lot. I've seen complaints saying it's "yurislop" or "yuribait", when it's neither. I believe these comments come from a very disingenous place, probably people who had no idea this was a yuri and were disgusted at how centric it is, but looking it at a narrative perspective, it's what you'd expect out of any story, that the main protagonists are the center of the story and its thematic message. This dynamic is presented early on, and constitutes for the very basics of the narrative, one that builds up from the very beginning and pays off by the end. It isn't queerbait neither, since the story very clearly shows notions of the two main leads being in love, or liking each other at least, shortly they meet each other. Of course, it's up to you if you dig this dynamic or not, but as a lesbian woman myself, while it wasn't one of my favorite love stories, it's filled with very cute moments and an actual, progressive development that only enriches the story, more notably on the season finale. THE MAJOR FLAW But, even with all my praises for it, there's one clear setback. It's not the best adaptation. By episode 4 or 5, I already noticed there was some slight instances of the anime feeling off, or at least, rushed. One specific scene, one that should've been very revealing to the protagonist and a point of inflection, turned out to be already resolved in that very scene, with no major development. And so, I did my research. As it seems, the anime is not an adaptation of its original source, the light novel of the same name, but an adaptation of the manga, which at the same time is an adaptation of the light novel, but with major changes, such as scenes being altered, added, or some being skipped. If you've been around these spaces for atleast a while, you must already know manga adaptations of any nature (adaptations of light novels or adaptations of original anime) don't always end well. Now, I haven't read the manga, but after seeing the official reddit and some fans being pissed off by this creative decision, I can see where the outrage comes from. The anime adaptation, by itself, is not horrid. It's not on the level of the worst quality adaptations out there, but it far from being perfect, and it's a problem when even people who've never read the original source (nor light novel or manga), like me, can spot it. And such, the anime comes off with some problems with its pace and animation quality that falters from time to time. The latter is also a big problem considering that the anime delves a lot into horror, body horror to be more specific, and while it's an incredible touch that gives the story a unique twist in comparison to others of the same nature, it can fall flat as it's not delivered perfectly. Again, I haven't read the source material to compare each exhibit, but it can be pretty clear that it could've taken another direction to make it more effective. CONCLUSION
And, to me, that's a pity, because I see a lot of potential in this story. I love the premise, everything that has been build up for the future seems promising, the main couple is one I'd love to see more of, and the cast of characters, while not perfect, are lovable enough to want them to stick around. Again, it's not perfect, but there's solid ground, and I liked everything I've seen thus far, but given what I've previously mentioned, the adaptation holds it back from being an anime I could consider a favorite. With this in mind, it's up to you If you want to give it a chance, but I'd say that you should go for it if the first episode hooks you one way or another. As I said, the light novel difers from the manga and anime, and so, watching the anime to see if it hooks you and reading the light novel later should offer no problem as they seem to be different experiences with their own qualities. Thank you for reading my first review!
