70/100Teary Eyes, Happy HeartContinue on AniListI watched the new Doraemon movie today, and honestly, I was not ready for the feelings.
I am a 90s kid from India. Doraemon was my whole childhood. School finished, TV on, snacks in hand- that was the best part of my day. So when I got a chance to watch it in cinemas with my nephew, I said yes at once. I had not watched Doraemon in almost ten years, so I was also a little scared. What if it feels too childish now?
It did not. The moment the old familiar faces came on the big screen, nostalgia hit me like a train. Not gonna lie, I got teary eyed. My nephew was busy with his popcorn, and I was sitting there wiping my eyes like a crazy aunty.
I also read a bit about the movie before writing this. It is a remake of the 1983 film and the 45th Doraemon anime film, and Tetsuo Yajima directed it.
The story is simple. Nobita and friends go on a deep ocean camping trip using Doraemon's gadgets, and they find a hidden undersea world and a danger that can hurt the whole planet. Easy to follow, so kids will not get lost. Nobita is lazy and scared like always, but he shows his brave side when it matters. This is why we love him. The heart of the movie is friendship, just like in the old days.
What I liked
The underwater world looks colourful and pretty, and the big screen really helps. The gadgets are fun. The amphibious buggy car is a nice touch.
The emotional parts work, even for a grown woman who thought she was too old to cry at a cartoon.
It feels like the Doraemon I remember. Same warm and silly mood, same good message.
What did not work for me
Some parts felt slow, and as an adult I wanted a bit more depth. The danger did not feel as big or scary as I hoped. Some older Doraemon movies hit harder.
I think nostalgia did a lot of the work for me. Without my childhood love, I may have liked it less.
It is also a hit in Japan. It stayed at number one at the box office for six weekends and earned over 3.7 billion yen. So many people liked it, not just me.
It is a good movie, but not the best Doraemon movie. I give it 7/10. If you grew up with Doraemon, go watch it. If you are new to Doraemon, you will still enjoy it, but you may not feel it as much as we old fans. Watching it with my nephew was the best part for me. He enjoyed the movie in his own way, and I enjoyed it in mine, with my own memories. It felt really nice to have two generations in one theatre, watching the same blue cat. I think this is why Doraemon never gets old. Kids get the fun and the gadgets, and grown-ups get the memories of their childhood. Even if I give the movie only 7/10, that feeling alone was worth the ticket money. I walked out of the theatre feeling like a small kid again.
