66/100The reason why this series wont be remembered in 20 yearsContinue on AniList_For starters I really enjoy grand blue as a series its a funny, multi-genred comedy anime and we don’t get enough of those these days. So of course, I want this series to achieve great things against its competitors in the comedy anime space..._ --- --- __So why the negative title?__ Well, we're on the 3rd season of Grand Blue Dreaming, so I came into this season wanting progressions of story lines (with somewhat conclusive elements since we won't get another season for a while) and the addition of new characters. I'll explain why now:
Comedy anime notoriously sometimes unintentionally becomes super slow when it comes to developing and keeping its cast of characters fresh and interesting due to a focus on making more and more gags per episode. Of course, gags need to remain to focus of comedy anime (since if they aren’t funny what’s the point lol) but I think even then this season is sometimes unsuccessful at that.Episode 2 and 3 were so horrible they felt like filler in a way. Not only was the passport thing completely unnecessary (because the trip happened anyway) but the jokes were so repetitive and horrible I think they'd only appeal to some of the Japanese audience.
The gags about the foreigners speaking giberish being muscular and super into anime and japanese girls was funny for the first 5 mins but it was a gag reused like 5 times lol, then they extend it to the Carina for like a final mic drop moment to prompt Shiori to give Iori's passport back. Maybe having 2 super foreigner orientated episodes would be more well recived in japan but even then I don't think they'd appreciate it being done for 2 concecetive episodes with such a half-baked ending
The whole Shiori plot-line of her (again) not wanting Kouhei to have a more exciting successful life, and leaving her at the house barley had any movement, she ended up returning the passport not because they got closer, but because of a shitty gag cramped in to the last 2 mins of the episode (yes I’m serious). This tedious plot-line shouldn't have taken 2 episodes of our season and could've been used for the Okinawa line as it was the highlight of the season.Unfortunately, this structure became a trend:
Open up a character focused plot-line -> Half ass it -> Make an funny or unfunny gag the majority of an episode.
While this worked in Season 1 and maybe Season 2, we're nearing the end of the series and if the show wants to be a Hall of Fame comedy anime. This is not the way to do it I'll be honest. But, this gets even worse when you realise how many characters get sidelined this season or outright forgotten. Sakurako Busujima is mentioned like once after having a good run in Season 2. Naomi Otoya also had one scene. Even though our OG season 1 bros Ryuujirou Kotobuki & Shinji Tokita are apparently leaving the diving club this plot-line gets sidelined for Iori and Kouhei's dumbass friend-group who are basically side characters lets be honest.
On the bright side, though, this season isn't all too bad. The season sometimes makes call backs to previous lines of dialogue throughout the series to progress the plot, which rewards attentive watchers which is always a treat, I liked the Iori and Chisa progressions and even the Cakey and Kouhei ones. Kouhei was great this season, I'd argue this was his season and maybe Cakey they made the show super enjoyable here.
I'd want more personality on Iori for future seasons since he's a pretty generic mc. So far there really isn’t enough Chisa content aside from her liking diving, to compare her to a more developed character, Cakey was originally known for wearing strong makeup to appear attractive since she was after men in the Tinkerbell Tennis Club and then later goes for a more natural look to pursue Iori, but now with season 3 content we know she's a country girl and of course has to stomach being a losing heroine character which makes her super enjoyable, oh and her VA makes her gags super hilarious this season.
Overall, this season didn't offend any more than the previous two, it remained the goofy, nude, and free spirited comedy anime we all know and love made with love by the animators drawing facial expressions and the VA's having a blast which gives it heart, the issue is if this is all the series is known for I'd fear it'd go down as an overrated comedy due to and I want the show I love to have longevity down the line, as it deserves to be as beloved as its manga.
I'm feeling a 66 on this season.
