DESCRIPTION

The horror comedy manga begins one fateful day when the cowardly (unnamed) protagonist meets Mechako, the leader of the "Kaikigumi" organization which is in charge of the ghosts and supernatural creatures scaring humans. The protagonist somehow takes part in the revival of the Kaikigumi, after which one bizarre (yet not scary) phenomenon after another crops up around him.

A Fun and Silly "Horror" Comedy, with Two Strong Leads
Horror and comedy are two genres that can surprisingly combine greatly, when done very well. Something I personally think quite a few anime and manga have managed to do. And this show being no exception to that. Though definitely leaning a lot more on the silly side than the scary one, which certainly was intentional.

I didn't know what to expect when I first started watching this show. I mainly watched it since the poster did look rather interesting and I liked the oldschool style it was going for with the art, which certainly helped it to stand out more.

And after watching it, I can safely say that while not an amazing or groundbreaking show, it was definitely a fun time!

As said, this show definitely leans more on the comedy side of things, with our protagonist meeting Mechako and because of her getting involved with bizarre and strange ghosts. From talking panties to jealous rice and evil manhole covers, the show definitely has a unique selection of ghosts, that aren't your typical yokai. The usual joke being that the ghost isn't scary, though the show at least manages to keep the joke fun every time.

And while its often just a collection of silly segments (with 1-2 that are a bit more emotional, helping them to stick out a bit more), I do like that there is an overarching story regarding Mechako and the organisation. Its all paced nicely in-between the silly ghost stuff so you won't get front loaded with it constantly. But at the same time, it still feels like the show builds towards something and isn't just a collection of silly situations. And it all leads to a satisfying final episode and climax, that manages to be both pretty funny...and actually creepy at the same time.

Another strenght of the show is the relationship between our protagonists. The unnamed guy, who is scared of everything and has a lot of knowledge over ghosts and Mechako being the more emotionless, sarcastic ghost girl who doesn't understand. It leads to a lot of fun banter between these two and it makes it a joy to watch the two of them interact with each other and with whatever ghost problem they have to deal with.

My only problem being that during the last episode it suddenly becomes a romance between the two of them and I do not know how to feel towards it. While there were some tiny hints in earlier episodes, it never really gave me the impression, that this is where the relationship between the two of them would go. And since it happens right at the end, its not like we can watch it develop any more, unless there will be a season two made. But overall, both of our protagonists definitely helped making this a fun show.

The other characters are pretty fun and fitting too. Mechakos evil cousin Shurako, the creepy Doppelganger or the constantly backstabbing
Snow woman. But not only that, but it helps giving more insight into this world. Seeing all of them interact and be awful to each other definitely helps showing why Mechako is the odd one out. And what ghosts usually are meant to do, which even gets pointed out later on.

So yeah, all in all, while not a perfect show by any means, I really enjoyed it and had such a fun time with. And if you are looking for a silly "horror" comedy with two very fun main-characters I think you are gonna really enjoy this one.

You definitely will not regret this!
