80/100Despite its cliché’s, it's a respectable look of the lives of people with disability with a gripping romantic hookContinue on AniList
Romance anime that have tragic elements are a double-edged sword for me. On one hand, they serve as a gut-wrenching emotional weight to a series that tugs at the heartstrings far more than it will bring you to tears. A lot of well-loved tragic romance anime's strongest moments lie in the difficult decisions a character has to make to move forward after a revelation. But on the other hand, if not used properly, it becomes a cheap gimmick to give a story a false sense of depth and emotion when it's clearly just playing with the viewer's sensitivity.
With that said, where does this new anime, Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky, fit into the greater anime landscape? Would it have a wonderful execution that deserves to sit next to the more well-known and well-loved tragic romance anime like Clannad, Your Lie in April, and I Want to Eat Your Pancreas, or would it just be another disposable gimmick that will be forgotten over time?
Thankfully, it is the former. ***
We follow our main character, Kakeru Sorano, a typical guy who just doesn't want to be part of the wave. He discovers Koharu Fuyutsuki at a college get-together party, where Kakeru discovers that she's unable to see people. As Kakeru and Koharu get to know each other more, they not only build a slow romantic bloom, but also develop a sustainable workaround for Koharu's incapacity so they can keep moving forward together.
This is a type of trope that isn't really original, and we've definitely seen it before, but what sets this apart is that not only is the disability showcased in this series something we don't see much in the anime space, but it doesn't use the disability trope as an emotional lever. Instead, it fully embraces what it truly feels like to live as a disabled person—not only from the perspective of Koharu's unique struggles, but also the lengths one has to go to and the additional effort required on the caretaker's side, like Kakeru.
For the first half of the series, you're not only immersed in their sweet, slow-blossoming romance, but also in what it feels like to live with someone who is incapacitated, or to live as that person themselves. It grounds the series in reality and sheds a spotlight on the unseen struggles these people face when navigating a world that does not cater to their needs, all packaged into this romantic series that's already a step above a lot of, and for some, great anime within this genre.
Aside from the natural and deeply romantic moments shared by Kakeru and Koharu, and the well-intentioned side characters that brought more life to the series, I can't help but see that this series definitely plays a lot of the tropes of its subgenre, and it really shows. Though there is this sudden shift in tone halfway through the series, which will be shocking for a lot of audiences, for me, it just feels like we've reverted back to the safe route of this subgenre for the sake of overdramatization. Thankfully, in this series, it does work, given how much buildup there was for us to care about these characters.
Another nitpick: the animation is not as expressive or creatively interesting as the series wants it to be, which does deter a bit from my enjoyment when watching the series. But this is largely dependent on the viewer's taste. ***
Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky is definitely not an original anime that tackles these types of themes, but what it can offer instead of simply showcasing them is allowing you to ride along with the daily lives of incapacitated people while still providing an emotional gut punch.
It's a must-watch anime for this year, as long as you're fine with its intriguing animation. ***

85/100"Thank you for the adventure, now go have a new one!"Continue on AniList"Thank you for the adventure, now go have a new one!"
That line might feel a bit dramatic out of context, but whether you read the light novel before or after watching this anime, its true meaning will eventually click.
Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky is a slice-of-life drama centered on two college students. There is Kakeru Sorano, a shy young man living far from his family with quiet burdens of his own, and Koharu Fuyutsuki, a cheerful student living with total blindness. Despite her visual impairment, Fuyutsuki’s condition has never dimmed her warm, outgoing presence.
Their paths cross at a lively university welcome party. Most students use these gatherings to boast about their excitement, vent their rough days, or just blend into the noise. Sorano isn't like that - he stays quiet, keeping his distance until his friend nudges him toward a table in the corner where a girl sits away from the main crowd. That girl is Koharu Fuyutsuki, accompanied by her close friend.
At first glance, nothing seems amiss. She is well-dressed, radiant, easygoing, and naturally charming - a genuine beauty. Yet, almost nobody approaches her. The hesitation stems from a simple reality: she is completely blind.
For many viewers, questions immediately come up: How does someone navigate the world without sight? How does she build an internal map of her surroundings? Can she truly find joy in daily life? Rather than treating these questions like abstract concepts, the series explores them through the shifting perspectives of both characters.
What I liked most is that this isn't only her story. Through Sorano’s eyes, we witness how Fuyutsuki handles the friction of daily life with grace, refusing to let her impairment define her identity. In turn, being around her gives Sorano a fresh perspective and a renewed sense of purpose. With his support, Fuyutsuki experiences facets of the world she felt locked out of. Even with her radiant outlook, she harbors quiet insecurities - wondering what she looks like, or whether she appears plain or clumsy, unable to verify her own reflection. Sorano’s sincere reassurance anchors her. The show gives both of them room to change, and that slowly grows into love.
The setup sounds modest, but simplicity is this anime's greatest asset. Stories focused so purely on quiet independence, empathy, and personal fulfillment are rare in modern anime. The stakes aren't world-ending; the conflict remains gentle and grounded. Fuyutsuki chooses to embrace life with all its limitations, and the people around her genuinely want to support that rather than patronize her. Certain scenes carried genuine emotional weight, and I'll admit I cried (I'm not making that up), reminding me of the tender empathy found in A Silent Voice - sharing a similar thematic core, but delivered through an entirely different lens.
Visually, the production matches the narrative tone. Instead of relying on gimmicks like extended black screens to simulate sightlessness, the direction focuses on how we perceive the senses around her - a choice Fuyutsuki herself helps contextualize. The art is clean, grounded, and unpretentious, complemented by subtle, effective sound design. The animation won't wow everyone, and some may find it plain, but it never bothered me.
If you enjoy understated romance, low-melodrama storytelling, and an honest exploration of living with a disability, Love Unseen Beneath the Clear Night Sky is an easy recommendation. If you are hunting for chaotic drama or explosive emotional breakdowns, you won't find it in here.
So much time skip in the last episode, damn!. Think Your Lie in April, but in September and bittersweet instead of purely tragic. Fuyutsuki recovers from her cancer, and she and Sorano get married and have a daughter. Later, a different cancer takes her life. She stays blind the entire time, but atleast all her dreams has been achieved

87/100Would you love me even if I was blind? (Spoilers)Continue on AniListNow, where should I start?
First of all, I watched a lot of romance anime in general, whether is it trash, mediocre, or genuine peak, I would always try to finish it. Having sat through dozens of formulas, tropes, and forced melodrama,I usually know exactly where a plot is heading, but also a sharp eye when a show actually has something real to say. So when I started watching this series, I thought this anime is another quiet, seasonal romance like A Sign of Affection, and oh boy was I baited so hard.
The initial setup felt straightforward. The male lead, Kakeru Sorano, is dragged to a mixer by his friend, where he crosses paths with Koharu Fuyutsuki. At first, it seems pretty normal, he quickly learns that Koharu was unable to see and navigating in this world requires extra effort and support. But as time goes on, it stops being about just 'will they get together' dynamic. Instead, it dives into how two people actually connect when standard communication isn't an option. It shifts away from generic romance tropes and captures the true weight of vulnerability, personal boundaries, and what it really means to understand someone.
What makes their dynamic work so well is how realistic and refreshing the character writing feels. Kakeru is an incredibly relatable protagonist because he isn't a flawless MC. He is awkward, nervous, and afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing. He has to actually learn how to behave around someone who is blind. On the other side, Koharu isn't a fragile heroine that needs to be protect. She is brave, independent and doesnt let her blindness stop her from stepping out into the world.
Another thing that makes this anime stand out is its use of sound. Since Koharu cannot see, the show shifts its focus from visuals to audio. I sometimes notice a subtle change in ambient noise, or a specific tone of a voice. Instead of relying on flashy animation or standard visual tricks, the series leans into these tiny sensory details. I can have a chance to experience the world Koharu lives in, which makes the quiet moments between her and Kakeru feel way more intimate.
When the story shifts gears into heavy medical drama in the second half, I felt like truck-kun just hit me at full speed. My heart sank when I heard the word '5%'. I found myself completely devastated by the direction the plot took. Yet, the writing handles this sudden shift so well that it kept me incredibly hooked, actively cheering the characters on and desperately hoping for a good turn of events. The emotional payoff feels entirely earned because the show doesn't take the easy way out. The narrative forces Koharu to face a brutal physical and mental struggle, showing raw vulnerability and realistic suffering rather than cheap, manipulative melodrama.
In conclusion, you should definitely give it a try, especially if you like slow-burn and bittersweet romance. It really reminds me of Your Lie In April but with a bittersweet ending. The ending was one of the best endings I could ask for. Its rare for an anime finale to give me this much emotional resonance.
Part of me wishes we could get an OVA or special episode, but peak really knows when to end.
Thank you for reading. Have a good day.
