Another case of: too much source material and not enough time

Even before starting this anime, I noticed the amount of six main characters in combination with a runtime of 13 episodes and thought to myself that this won't work in an action- adventure anime... and suprise; it didn't.

Apparently the anime is based on a series of games, which is called the Shining Series. But it's not only covering the material of one but two of those games: Shining Tears and Shining Wind. Hence the title Shining Tears X Wind.

In the first episode there is a friend group of six students introduced; three guys and three girls. Their original goal is to solve the mystery around disappearances in their town and they end up traveling to another world called End Earth themselves. They don't all travel together, but in pairs of two (one boy + one girl). This process is only shown for one pair; Souma and Kureha. Souma is the one I'd call out as the actual main character because the anime centers around him the most. Meanwhile the other characters listed as main don't get as much screen time.
Mao for example is introduced in the first episode, only to have her next important appearance in episode eight.

From the start it is painfully obvious that there is simply not enough time. The story itself isn't entirely bad but everything feels rushed. World building doesn't really happen and stays at a very superficial level. For example two of the kingdoms of End Earth are stuck in you're average fantasy medieval setting, meanwhile the third kingdom is introduced with a bombing and a tank rolls around the corner, but for the rest of the anime they end up fighting with swords...?
Early on, the anime also gets rid of the original goal when it is quickly, quietly and conveniently assumed that everyone who vanished just died. The goal gets replaced by the fullfillment of your average legend about so called soul bladers, which will arrive in End Earth when disaster strikes and rescue everyone.
This is the way how it is with a lot of things in this anime. Stuff just is how it is and happens because the plot needs it to. When something is explained it happens in the most boring way: dialogues. In additon there are no to few breaks in the anime to catch your breath.

The characters of the source material are probably fleshed out properly. In the anime they get development and what I've seen from some of them kept me interested. But because there is no time, too many characters and a plot that needs to be finished one only get's a glimpse of their depth and then it's back to business. It's especially tragic because the power system of the soul bladers they rely on is build around relationships.
