100/100Review Of Yani Neko / Chainsmoker CatContinue on AniListCHAINSMOKER CAT REVIEW
I was recommended this bizzare anime by a friend of mine and I honestly was having doubts on watching it based on what I saw online about the weirdness of it, but nonetheless, I gave it a shot.
And wow, genuinely one of the most funniest and weirdest anime I’ve watched in my lifetime. I feel more connected with Yaku Neko throughout the show and I love how Yani’s addiction and the others are portrayed in the anime, showing how it affects your general lifestyle and your mental wellbeing. I don’t normally rate animes this high but for Yani Neko/Chainsmoker Cat, it’s genuinely a different story.
The show also has a sense of comfort from all the characters in the show, even when the landlord is a creepy guy, he still tries to make his cat friends feel comfortable in their apartments, including the human Saori too.
Early in my review, i mentioned feeling a connection with Yaku Neko for multiple reasons ;
1. When she was first introduced as a friend of Yani, I thought to myself, same addiction but on another level, genuinely, as she would take more serious alternatives rather than only smoking like Yani, so I liked how the author portrayed her earlier heavy addiction at the time
2. SPOILER Later in the season, Yaku seemed to have shift as a person who heavily relied on harder stuff to have a complete turnaround and completely stopped taking them, only smoking as of current
3. SPOILER 2 Another thing that occurred later on was the death of her grandfather, who we can tell was her only family member who truly cared about her and we are shown her mental breakdown in her apartment when Yani entered, genuinely one of the saddest scenes I saw in a comedy/slice of life anime. Her grandfather was also one of the biggest factors on her turnaround in my opinion and there is a suspicion that he was ultimately a victim to hate crime in the series as she questions herself on “why are humans despicable”Today, I wanted to share my review on this anime as the first season is coming to an end and I will definitely rewatch all the episodes when the last episode releases. I need a season 2 of this anime desperately please release another season in a few years or maybe next year when I finish my exams
As the season is about to end, I genuinely need anime recommendations with the unique elements of Yani Neko because I actually really enjoyed this anime and yes I’m glazing the heck out of it, I don’t really care
I heavily recommend watching some great Yani Neko analysis on the presented addictions in the anime, to essentially understand the deeper meaning behind addictions and how it perfectly portrays your reliance on a specific material to keep you in a surviving state of mind and the breaking down if you don’t the particular material around you.

70/100Gross, crude and repulsive, Yani Neko's humor thrives with a hopeless cast as they fail their way through society.Continue on AniList__It needs to be said that Yani Neko isn't for everyone.__ It's gross, repulsive and weird, but in the same vein is just too damn entertaining. Every week I found myself asking the same question as the week before: _"There is no way this show is able to outdo itself right?"_ moments before the show, indeed, outdoes itself.
Yani Neko is its own rare breed of anime that you rarely see nowadays with it's grotesque humor. It would fit perfectly in early to mid 2000s era Adult Swim shows, yet here it is on Netflix (in the US) in 2026. That is not to say this is a good or bad thing: some of the jokes can become too disgusting or didn't really land with me, and other times I'm dying to some of the dumbest jokes to ever air for a TV anime. The show doesn't even try to walk on a thin line with it's humor, it stumbles around like a drunk man hoping it can reach the nearest park bench before they spill their guts out. One of the prominent side characters, Kansaineko, has a running gag where she literally makes awful jokes. It just cannot be stressed enough how the comedy in this show is just chaotic, and in my opinion, is better off that way. It's no wonder why clips of this show would go viral on social media platforms every week a new episode aired.
Beyond the comedy of the show, Yani Neko presents a very interesting but dark premise, one that often mimics our own society. The show revolves around a small double story apartment and its occupants, all of which are barely functioning members of Japan. Our main character Yaniko is a chain smoker who lives in a filthy apartment and frankly smells like shit. Her neighbor, Yakuko, is an ex-convict that used to abuse illegal drugs. Her downstairs neighbor Aruko, abuses alcohol so much she suffers from involuntary tremors. An oft underrated aspect of Yani Neko is just how the show convinces you to like these characters despite their vices. The addictions they suffer from are depicted so shockingly real, I often reconsidered my position on ever touching a single cigarette or drinking another can of beer. They struggle as they try to conform to a society that looks down upon them, sometimes for faults not from their own doing. It makes these characters endearing, and even relatable to some.
For the most part, Bibury did an OK job with the animation quality of the show. Being a comedy show that did short comedic gags, the sometimes low animation quality never really detracted much from my enjoyment, though it does need to be acknowledged that a few episodes have noticeable dips in quality especially in later episodes. I also need to mention the now famous opening of Yani Neko as well. __Nanmonnee__ by Wasureranneyo is a fun song that encapsulates the show and it's characters perfectly, and it's opening sequence, directed by Taku Kimura, is fantastic. So many great movies are referenced here, and perfectly sets the tone of the show. The ending sequence is also a joy to watch being directed by Riki Matsuura of Studio Shaft fame. The song __Smoke and Blue__ by Necry Talkie has also became a favorite of mine as time went on.
If you are able tolerate or even enjoy gross and crude humor, Yani Neko is a fun watch with a great cast of characters that carry the gags and jokes of the show. To me it's a weird comfort show that often lifted my mood due to its absurdity. You'll quickly find out if this show will be absolutely deplorable or hilarious depending on your taste in humor, and hopefully you come to the same conclusion I ended up with when you watch.

85/100Somehow they made an anime about a chain-smoking anthropomorphic cat feel like a breath of fresh airContinue on AniListYani Neko is a rare sight in popular anime nowadays as it doesn't hold back in its filthy portrayal of addiction to cigarettes, alcohol and other substances. Rather than taking itself seriously, the show uses that dirty display as a foundation for its humour. It caters to a very specific audience that appreciates crude humour. If those jokes resonate with you, I think you will find this to be a highly entertaining show.
The style of the show is reminiscent of Gintama with its episodic nature, running gags, various references and of course the potty jokes. (I was not expecting a Twin Peaks reference in episode 3). The opening itself is an indication of the style, using numerous references from films and TV shows that depict characters smoking in 'cool' way and then sharply contrasting that image with Yani Neko smoking in her room that should be considered a bio-hazard. The animated nature of the show perfectly compliments the commentary against smoking as it makes that disgusting subversion of the positive image of smoking a more light-hearted watch.
The characters are definitely the highlight of the show. I loved all the characters in this show for how entertaining and quirky they are. Yani essentially living for smoking and the landlord's beastfolk fetish were two of the highlights for me. The characters' motivations for acting in the way they do isn't explored in much detail but rather the way they act on a day to day basis is the main priority. I don't think that takes away from the appeal of the show not only because it's hard to do so for numerous characters in 12 episodes but also because the point of the first season was to showcase its style and anti-smoking nature purely based on the present. There are glimpses of their reasoning of getting into the habit such as Yani's mother's addiction, Yaku's family troubles, and Manga girl's career issues. If the anime ever get's a second season I hope that would be the direction that they go in. But a deep character exploration is nowhere present in this first season.
With this first season they were able to establish an interesting world involving beastfolk that are primarily used for labour. This does show it's toll through Yani as she works such jobs. Again, it isn't developed extensively and used more so as a tool for gags but I think the ideas are set well. I found the characters appealing, the jokes clicked with me perfectly and I love the episodic style of it all. I am hoping we get a second season of this and that the jokes only get dirtier, character's get messier and landlord gets hornier. My personal score could be considered inflated as I am a biased towards this particular style but I am sure other fans with similar interests would find this to be good fun too.
