DESCRIPTION

Michishio Nagasumi's life couldn't be any more normal. In an odd twist of events, during his summer vacation he ends up almost drowning in the sea. Luckily, the cute mermaid Seto San appears to save him. However, San is from a yakuza mermaid family and according to their law, if a human is to catch sight of a mermaid, either he or the mermaid must die. The only other way is for Nagasumi to be taken in as a family member, marrying San. In attempts to save both of their lives, Nagasumi asks for San's hand in marriage. Nagasumi's summer vacation reaped more then what he would expect, as he must now protect San from others finding her secret out.

100/100
Obscure? Maybe? A slice of life and a slice of supernatural come together to make a whole whimsy.
Seriously, can I give this show a score of 101? No? Okay, fine. I do think this is the only anime I've ever watched that I liked better than Toradora... man, it hurts saying that. I'm not sure which I like better. Toradora is, like, almost sacred to me, and that might be why I've watched through this anime so many more times that Toradora. Or, it could be because I like it better! Which is highest praise. Seriously, my wife and I quote the English dub of this show almost constantly. From Naughty-sumi to joking about the shark fin enlargement from that one episode, to the amazing and very powerful "song of sleep" to "I am a Dragon!" LOL! Like, Chimp-Roshi!!!

Usually, I do prefer to watch anime in Japanese with subs, but the English cast for this show is what we had available on Netflix back in the day when it was on Netflix and back in the day when I used to have Netflix and oh my God the voice actors nailed it! It is so funny! I have the whole thing on DVD! Not many shows I can say that about. Though, I just saw on this very website that, apparently, there's an OVA!!!? Why didn't anyone tell me!!?

Seriously, this is probably my favorite by far. It's funny and charming in a way that feels like home in my heart. In fact, when my wife and I visited Japan we went to the Seto Inland Sea. My God it was beautiful. Though, we didn't see any mermaids.... or Yakuza!

Fun fact: the English voice cast of this show is almost entirely the same as the English voice cast of Rosario + Vampire and they even have similar character roles. Like Todd Habberkorn is the male MC and Alexis Tipton voices the female MC and their personalities are kind of similar. Kind of, anyway. Similar enough that it's funny to watch Rosario+Vampire after watching this because of how Alexis Tipton delivers her lines. She's just a naturally funny person.

I really need to get all the merch for this show that I can. I can't believe I never knew an OVA existed. This is easily the most underrated show ever.

Another fun fact: The Japanese title is a reference. Seto no Hanayome means "The Bride of Seto" referring to the Seto region or the region around the Seto Inland Sea. It was a song from, I think, the 60's in Japan that was very rustic and very popular about a humble bride that gets married and moves to the country and lives a quiet and simple life there. Funny because this show is the opposite in terms of vibes! Except that they also end up happy. Seriously, this is a great show! So many funny references.
