30/100MC goes through no development, side characters are 2D, settings aren't used wellContinue on AniListYoung Black Jack has a great premise, but in execution, functions quite poorly.
The plot is about Hazama on his journey to become Black Jack, the unlicensed surgeon and yet, he goes through little or no character development throughout the entire series. Resolutions to conflicts leave the viewer unsatisfied, especially due to how little high stakes decisions, are really high stakes. The predictability of each episode wouldn't be a problem had there been either more build up or even something new, like Hazama failing a surgery and losing a patient due to it. Moments like Hazama shaking after his first surgery humanized his character, but these things were few and far between. This begins to feel very robotic, cut and dry, and boring very early.
Other characters have little backstory or moments to shine, making them feel as if they're only there to sing Hazama's praises or oppose him; essentially, they were very 2D. One of the biggest offenders of this is Maiko, an intern and a friend of Hazama's. She functions somewhat similarly to Pinoko in other adaptations. Never in the entire series does she seem to complete a surgery on her own on screen. She merely praises Hazama and sometimes attempts to "step in." There are numerous moments that would have been perfect for her to have a few moments, to add some substance to her character. Small things like giving her personal reasons to stick so strongly to certain rules, or giving her a backstory would have made the viewer feel more attached to her or would have rounded her out more. To list a comparison, there's Yabu's relationship with Hazama. It's clear Yabu is his own person, with his own struggles and flaws. Hazama and Yabu feel like friends, with Yabu cementing himself into Hazama's life. Maiko on the other hand, is really just "lucky" to be there. Hazama and her feel like strangers and function as coworkers, nevermind as friends.
The anime severely underutilized and even misrepresents certain conflicts. The Civil Rights movement and the Vietnam/American war are two very stark examples of this. It's understandable that these were watered down considering how controversial topics like these can be, but even in the manga(in which the politics are expanded on far more), these events are still acted out through biased lenses. It leaves with the impression the author did little research on what was being represented and what was actually going on. For a series originally created in 2011 with the anime airing in 2015, there were certain expectations to be had about the politics and history shown here. Even ignoring the biases of each event, the horrors of these times don't seem to make as much of an impact on Hazama, save for a few flashbacks. In fact, Hazama seems to take on a "white knight" role in a lot of this. On a more positive note, the inclusion of Kiriko was wonderful(yet in the original Black Jack manga, it's said Kiriko served in World War II rather than in Vietnam!)
Overall, this anime ultimately falls short both as a backstory and especially as a standalone story.
