90/100How Hellsing's Deluxe edition captures it's bloody violenceContinue on AniListSEARCH AND DESTROY!
ANY FORCE WHICH OPPOSES US IS TO BE CRUSHED UNDERFOOT!
ALL OBSTACLES ARE TO BE REDUCED TO DUST AND ASH!There is a chapter in Hellsing where Alucard stands atop a nosediving, burning SR-71 plane. Crashing, at mach 3 speed, into a vampire-nazi occupied aircraft carrier as their werewolf commander of the military unit monologues in fear. The now-engulfed in flames SR-71 impales the carrier as it becomes a giant alit cross. The burning gravestone of the Nazi unit, and the exploding ship they occupy.
Hellsing has 92 chapters.
One of the coolest manga ever. All of this action is captured with erratic, messy, bloody art that flows through the panels super well. Full of harsh blacks depicting raging nights that make way to excessive sprays of blood, dripping into a deep puddle within the shadows five times the size of the clad-in-darkness caster, adjusting his glasses. The bright white reflection of his left lens the only reprieve of darkness within the page.
Hirano knows what HE thinks would be the coolest thing to portray next. All you have to do is see eye to eye and embrace the bloody vampire var. And I so love var.
Amen.

Moving on to some points about the Deluxe itself;
The books are seriously cool. Mimicking a blood-soaked trinity of bibles makes this one of the most striking series on my shelves.
There's a ton of bonus material collected in the final volume, a bonus story about Iscariot, Cover arts, dust jacket arts, short stories and author notes. Stuff every self-respecting collected edition should strive to include.
As with Dark Horse's TRIGUN Deluxe, I'm not fond of how the onomatopoeia are handled. The effect its supposed to translate is written out small in-between panels, and this just does not capture the impact that wants to be present. Some kana knowledge goes a long way for me, but having a page full riddled with giant 「ドカツ!」"DOKATSU" 「ドカツ!」"DOKATSU" 「ドカツ!」 "DOKATSU" as Alucard unloads both of his clips into Anderson to be relegated to a weak little "kblam" in the corner of the page is not it. Sure, it means Hirano's art remains mostly untouched. But some sacrifices have to be made when translating manga. The way Initial D did it, with a powerful font accompanying the Japanese kana, would have gone a long way here.
But that's the typesetting. The translation is EXCELLENT. Everyone speaks with a strong accent. Ze suave frenchman, the Var-torn und spiteful Thousand Year Reich and of course the Irish Father Anderson, who I can't even begin to emulate, had ta read some of 'is lines oot lood ta understand 'em from taim ta taim. It's lovely and absolutely brilliant work.

75/100A visually stunning manga with great characters and style, held back by a surprisingly limited story.Continue on AniListWhile I had already watched both the original Hellsing anime and Hellsing Ultimate back in the day, Hellsing is one of those series that always caught my attention because of its premise and, above all, its artwork. So I finally decided to read the original manga, hoping to find in it what I had been looking for all along, but what neither of the anime adaptations had really managed to give me.
From the beginning, Hellsing is very interesting, and Alucard's introduction is fantastic. He's one of those characters that becomes more enjoyable the more you see him, and throughout the manga, Hirano constantly puts him at the center of the experience. He's easily one of the most powerful and interesting characters in the entire series, and watching him slowly reveal more of what he is capable of was always entertaining.
That said, I also really liked characters like Anderson, Walter, Seras, Pip, and Integra. My main problem with the cast is that while some of their backgrounds are interesting, I often felt like they could have been explored much more. I wanted more interaction between the characters, more relationships developing naturally, and more time to actually see them together. I'm not saying those relationships aren't there, because they definitely are, but outside of a few particular moments, the interactions are usually pretty brief, and I often found myself wanting more.
Anderson was easily my favorite character. The whole thing with his bayonets and the way he constantly references the Bible or specific passages while talking was fantastic. I also really liked the idea of having someone who, from our everyday understanding, could almost be considered the "hero" on one of the antagonistic sides of the story.
That's because Hellsing doesn't really work with a traditional idea of good and evil. There is this sort of moral fog surrounding most of the characters where almost everyone is capable of doing good or bad things depending on the situation. Obviously, there are some exceptions, especially Millennium and Maxwell, but for the most part, I liked that the series wasn't interested in creating a simple division between heroes and villains.
Then there's the actual story, which is kind of difficult to explain. Hellsing is one of those series where you either accept what it's doing or you probably won't enjoy it. I mean, Nazi artificial vampires. Yes, that's actually part of the story. And somehow, within everything the manga establishes, it works. It has its own internal logic, and eventually you just accept it as part of what makes Hellsing what it is.
The problem for me is that the actual narrative is surprisingly limited. It's not that nothing happens, because a lot happens. There are battles, betrayals, different factions, major events and plenty of things constantly going on. But when I look at the story as a whole, there isn't actually that much development behind all of that movement.
I could probably summarize most of the major events in Hellsing in a surprisingly short amount of time. There are a lot of things happening, but not necessarily a lot of narrative progression. Some resolutions also didn't feel particularly satisfying to me, and that's one of the main reasons I can't give the manga a much higher score.
I don't think the storytelling is bad, but I do think it's limited. There is a lot of style, a lot of interesting characters and plenty of memorable moments, but the actual story doesn't feel as deep as I expected it to be.
And then we get to the artwork, which is easily the strongest part of Hellsing and probably what I enjoyed the most while reading it.
Hirano's character designs are incredible. Alucard looks fantastic, Anderson looks fantastic, and honestly, there were several moments where I just stopped reading because I wanted to look at the artwork for a while. There are some double-page spreads where the amount of detail in the backgrounds is ridiculous. I found myself looking at them for minutes, just trying to find all the little details hidden throughout the panels.
That's probably the biggest reason why I enjoyed reading Hellsing considerably more than watching it. The manga has a visual identity that I don't think either anime adaptation managed to reproduce in exactly the same way. There is something about the artwork that works much better when you can actually stop and look at a page for as long as you want.
And honestly, reading the manga helped me understand Hellsing better. I ended up preferring the original manga by quite a significant margin over both anime adaptations. It gave me a better appreciation for the characters, the artwork, and especially the weird identity of the series.
At the end of the day, I think Hellsing is a series you read mainly for its characters, artwork, designs, atmosphere, and the completely insane setting Hirano created. The story itself is probably the weakest part for me, especially considering how much potential I think there was for the characters and their relationships.
But I don't think that makes Hellsing a bad manga. It's a genuinely enjoyable series with a very strong identity, and even when I had problems with the story, I was still having a good time reading it.
If you've already watched either of the anime adaptations, I would still recommend giving the manga a chance. In fact, I would probably recommend reading the original before watching either adaptation if you're discovering Hellsing for the first time. The manga has something that the anime never quite managed to reproduce, and that's probably the thing I was looking for when I finally decided to read it.
Final Score: 75/100
