DESCRIPTION
Rumor has it that a mysterious girl with white hair has suddenly teamed up with the famous thief Feng Linger. She is so good that she has beaten many martial arts masters of the underworld. People can’t help but wonder who she is, and where she got her training to become such a master. But above all, is she siding with the good, or the evil? With all these questions, Feng Linger and the white haired girl somehow seem like they don’t care a bit. They simply continue on their journey, not realizing the great conspiracy that comes towards them.

45/100Soulmates on the most boring and forgettable adventureContinue on AniList__This review does not contain any spoilers. It’s safe to read before watching.__ *** A female protagonist, even two of them. Yuri as a highly rated tag. Historical setting. Basically all my favourite things. So what went wrong? Well, the series turned out to be the definition of “meh”. That went wrong. The premise is simple: a young thief was recently joined by a mysterious white haired girl with some incredible martial skills. They travel around, and while they do, some dark conspiracy seems to unravel itself in their wake. Based on that and the genre list (Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama) I expected something similar to _Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran_ - two warrior besties travelling through the world, helping people or causing problems, whichever they find more convenient. And then some kind of overarching plot showing itself in the second half of the series. Great, just girls doing girly things - and each other, judging by the tags. My expectations were not super high, but I was ready for some fun. The first episode was enough to make me realise it may lead to disappointment. Story starts with two girls travelling, indeed. The first episode has them attempting to steal something from a young rich man, and uses it as an opportunity to show the protagonists’ skills and personalities. It's a pretty good start. And then the rich boy joins them on their journey. And the overarching plot comes with him. I'm not going to discuss every episode and story choice, and I do not wish to spoil the watch for anyone, so let me just vaguely summarise the rest. There is no casual travelling. The main story shows up instantly and is there for the rest of the series. The protagonists don't “somehow seem like they don’t care a bit. They simply continue on their journey”, like the Anilist description says. They're constantly fighting, being kidnapped or saving each other, and then fighting some more. The rich boy is with them for some time, but the main part is two of them stuck in combat. There are enemies aplenty, though I wouldn't necessarily call them a conspiracy - just your usual bunch of power hungry people eager to beat up a teenage girl. The encounters with them lead the protagonists to learn some truths about their backstories, which tie to the main plot, and it's all connected in a huge web of clichés and boring use of tropes. It's just… so uninteresting. Nearly all parts of the story are so plain and forgettable - they're mostly not even bad, they're just nothing of note. And I believe using tropes is great! But using a bunch of them in a way every other story already did… nah. It's not even particularly well-written to make up for the boring ideas. From the start, it looks alright. Nicely drawn, nicely animated. Then the second episode happens and for some unknown reason it’s CGI and looks pretty awful. Fortunately, it passes, but there are some weird looking moments later on as well. Overall it looks okay. The backgrounds are pretty, and the animation works well. But nothing more. I wasn’t impressed by the fighting scenes - I feel they were decent, but just that. The choreography was cool, but the whole magical side of the fights were just awfully plain.
The main girls are pretty good leads. They're likeable and cute. Cute enough to make the slower moments worth it, and it's a shame the series didn't give them more time to just spend together on some side quests. The character designs are one of the best parts. The protagonists look very distinctive, and match each other nicely. The rest is mostly much more plain, although a group of side characters that shows up a bit later definitely steals the show. They're a funky looking bunch, one of the highlights. About the “yuri” tag… I know it may be the sole reason some people want to watch it, so let me quickly explain: meh. It's not as explicit as one might have hoped. Fruity, yeah, I totally see them that way but it's as subtle as the gentlest blow of wind - the title _Spirit Wind Elegance_ certainly matches this well. But really, it's nothing noteworthy. If they get gayer in the sequel, I'd say yeah, there were signs. But if it's just a queerbait, it is not even that strong. It's my first review on this site and I wondered how to rate it - the same as I did on my list? Or try to be more objective? Well, no review is truly objective, so… It's something in the middle. If one didn't have any expectations, I guess it may be a decent watch. But nothing more than that. There's just nothing novel about the story. The setting is super plain and generic, the story is painfully boring, and the characters are not endearing enough to carry it all. I was disappointed enough to write this thing, so it's something. TL;DR: just watch _Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran_ instead.

80/100The beginnings of a journey through a fantastical landContinue on AniListI'm new to this "wuxia" and "cultivation" stuff. I've read a few Chinese webcomics before, but not enough to be that familiar with those terms. So, to me this was actually really interesting and new. For someone very familiar, maybe they might not find it as interesting. I am not certain. The premise on Anilist is a bit misleading. It is very true that the two of them aren't really focusing on the conspiracies brewing around them, and have their own goals that take much higher priority, but the rest of it doesn't really fit how the show flows.
This is very much a show centered around Linger and Yuxiu on a journey. But not the slow sort, and it's really more like this is the beginning of the real journey. It feels much like a prologue to something grander. There's a lot of action, but there're also scenes where it slows down. I believe only two episodes lacked a fight scene. The combat was enjoyable, I thought. And where the animation quality is definitely at its highest.
Speaking of that, in the beginning, it is very very poor. But, as the season goes on, it gets steadily better. Never really what I would consider "good", but it does improve. The first episode and maybe the second episode, almost feels like a picture book. But things really do improve as it goes on. Possibly due to how the episodes were not weekly, and the technique may have been improved as it continued on. The art itself is visually appealing, and the character designs are all distinct and have a flavor of their own. The main leads as well, have a very complimentary sort of look that lends to fun scenes throughout.
Speaking of the main leads, they really do have some great chemistry. I am desparately hoping the tags aren't lies like they tend to be on this site, but this season defintiely setup much potential for the two of them to go beyond "just friends" in the future. You can tell the both of them care very dearly about each other. But whether it will fully embrace that or not in season 2, I do not know as of writing this review, as I have just finished season 1. But expect some great moments throughout, especially once it nears the end of season 1~
As for the story itself, I found it engaging, and found myself wanting to learn more and more about the world and the organizations. I, of course, wanted the most to learn more about Linger and Yuxiu, but they do a good job of creating the right amount of hook for different organizations. They also have a lot of characters, while a few get hte most screentime in this season, including a certain rich boy. I will say, there is zero reason to worry about him getting inbetween Linger and Yuxiu. But I do hope he eventually finds someone. Has some adorkable moments and doesn't deserve to be alone. Also, the ED covers characters that are not in season 1 too, so should be interesting to see what they're like.
I think this chaotic review has probably hit a stopping point. I really do recommend anyone lookinig for a yuritext action adventure with a cute and slippery thief MC and her mysterious and whimsical white haired friend who is much stronger than she appears, give this a go. I also recommend anyone looking for a different sort of flavor to their yuri, and that hasn't yet been too heavily exposed to the "wuxia" genre, to definitely at least go for season 1. It's a very different sort of experience than all the Japanime out there. Here's hoping to season 2 being even better, and a season 3 being a possibility in the near future!
