DESCRIPTION
Welcome to BAR California, a place for you to reveal your true self. People of different genders, propensities, and sexual orientations gather at a certain chic bar that's hidden from the public eye. While some come in search of themselves, others step into the establishment looking for sex and love. There are as many sexualities as there are people, and the patrons' stories intertwine as they struggle to find happiness. A bisexual trans woman who's been hurt by the voices of others wishes she had a "normal" relationship; a married, middle-aged salaryman secretly expresses his female side; and a pansexual cis guy is on the lookout for true love.

100/100A fantastic and short readContinue on AniListLast Gender When We Are Nameless
This manga opens with a trigger warning for depictions of bigotry, violence, and suicide. If you do decide to read this manga, keep that in mind.
"This place can be paradise, or it can be hell. It all depends on the person. Everyone is welcome. No matter who they are."
The opening to this manga sets the scene perfectly. A bar that accepts anyone. Regardless of if others do. Last Gender is one of few LGBTQIA+ manga that I've read. That is, one that tries its best to depict a variety of people. There's a lot of different people in the world, and manga like this helps to spread knowledge about these kinds of things. That isn't to say knowing somebody's label will tell you everything about them, as this manga sets out to prove. Whether somebody is trans, bisexual, polyamorous, or even if they don't know yet, each person has their own story. Each story is unique, and just hearing a snippet of it doesn't automatically make us experts on that person. Last Gender doesn't really have a main character because of this. There is the lady who runs the bar, but she's not always around. There's the guy who comes to work at the bar, but that's not until much later into the story. We don't get to know everything about a character, and that works out perfectly for this manga. People are very different from one another.Last Gender tries its best to depict everything as real as possible. It does so phenomenally. Nothing is egregious or outlandish. Even if I or you did think some things could be, are we the ones to judge that? This is a story, yes, but is what's depicted real? Rather, could it be? Young and old of any variety people are still changing and learning about themselves. New experiences and knowledge can change how we view the world and ourselves. Despite our changing perspectives, we are still us. Whoever we are. Human.I could never recommend Last Gender enough. It is a fantastic manga with so much weight and emotion put behind it. It's a manga that holds nothing back in what it is depicting. To harken back to that trigger warning at the beginning, it is there for a reason. Even if you don't think you could stomach the contents of this manga for one reason or another, I would recommend you check it out at the very least. LGBTQIA+ manga are few and far between, and for people that may be like you or I, we need good media like this to represent us. Something that welcomes us unquestioningly. No matter who we are.
