I'll try to keep this spoiler free. I'll talk about early chapter stuff but otherwise try to only talk about later story stuff vaguely as well as showing pictures from the manga.
I was very impressed with The Ramparts of Ice. I'm always a sucker for series with shy or introverted main character, but I think what made the main character, Koyuki Hikawa, such a breathe of fresh air is how she isn't depicted in this overly exaggerated anime trope way that a lot of other series play into. As much I love my shy timid girls who shake and cower over the thought of social interactions; I loved the portrayal of Koyuki as a more realistic and down to earth take on shy girls. She isn't exactly eager to socialize with others at first, but she doesn't appear to be scared either. Koyuki just wants to fade into the background without people perceiving her too much. I found her to be very relatable in that aspect. She reminds me a lot of myself in high school and somewhat still today.
Another aspect I love about Ramparts of Ice is how it plays on the perceptions people have on the characters as well as OUR expectations as the viewers. Koyuki is introduced as a scary and cold girl who doesn't care about hanging out with others or how she is perceived by them. But later we realize she is like this due to the bullying she faced in middle school that made her put up her ramparts of ice (haha).
Koyuki isn't the only great character though. We have an ensemble cast of four main characters and I think all of them are written so fantastically real as well. I was shocked to find myself relating so much to parts of Miki and Minato's stories as well. Agasawa has really nailed how to make characters have realistic flaws that play into their humanity and how they act within the story. Because of this I found the romance and friendship dynamics in Ramparts of Ice to be that much more satisfying. You really get a sense for why these characters develop feelings for one another and understand why they compliment each other so well.
There are lots of misunderstandings in romance stories and its definitely prevalent in The Ramparts of Ice as well. But what I love about Ramparts of Ice is how well we understand these characters so it makes sense why they act in the ways that they do even if frustrating. The drama never feels cheap or out of nowhere only to cause unnecessary tension. Its all purposeful and with the intent to help the characters change and develop for the better.
Because of how real I found these characters to be I grew to love seeing them overcome their struggles. Its all done very satisfactorily. I do wish this manga had gone on for longer so we could go into certain things even more, but that's just a testament as to how much I enjoyed this series that I wish it was longer. All things considered I was still very happy with how the main fours stories concluded. It's a wonderful series that I can't recommend enough.
