80/100A slow-burn high-school romantic melodrama in 2026? I'm absolutely downContinue on AniList
Slow-burn romance anime is something you rarely see these days. Sure, there are titles like Insomniacs After School—which I’d argue is a great anime—but there’s another element modern romance romcoms have been missing lately: melodrama.
It’s the style popularized by shows like Toradora!, The Pet Girl of Sakurasou, and Golden Time, where emotional conflict took center stage. But over time, that aspect slowly faded out of fashion. Most modern romance anime now reserve melodrama for only the final few episodes—and understandably so, since melodrama can easily be hit or miss.
But amidst the abundance of romance shows lately, many of them follow the same formula: they hook you with an interesting premise in episode one, only to fall back into a stale script afterward, mechanically ticking boxes for each arc.
Even for a romance junkie like me, it gets tiring.
And since we’re living through a nostalgia epidemic lately, what better way to revive that feeling in romance anime than by bringing the romcom melodrama trope back front and center?
That’s where The Rampants of Ice comes in. ***
This anime follows Koyuki, a misunderstood character who carries a cold, distant presence, yet is surrounded by warm-hearted friends like the main male leads Minato and Youta, along with her female friend Miki, through whom she gradually begins to open up.
However, the story is not confined to her perspective alone. Instead, it balances the narratives of all four main characters as they navigate the typical dilemmas of adolescence. At times, it even delves deeper beneath the surface, exploring themes that can be uncomfortable for many during their youth—such as attachment issues, social roles, and unrequited feelings that, in the broader picture, often lead to self-inflicted suffering. Yet, these very struggles also become what draws the characters closer together, reinforcing the series’ melodramatic core as these four Characters try to overcome their personal internal dilemmas and relational trauma through love and connection.
While you’ve likely seen similar premises in modern romance anime, what sets this apart is how consistently it embraces melodrama across all episodes. And yes, it still balances this with comedy, staying true to its romcom roots. Alongside its slow-burn pacing, it doesn’t reveal all its plotlines at once. Instead, it gradually unfolds them across episodes, creating an anticipatory feeling—a desire to understand each character’s past, their present conflicts, and where they’re ultimately headed.
The result is a comforting, easy watch—something you can simply put on, lie back, and spend a few hours getting lost in.
I’d say “casual” fits it well, because even though I enjoyed watching this series and could see fragments of myself in these characters, I wouldn’t really call it the best romance anime of the year.
It has strong competition. Last season’s You & I Are Polar Opposites brought a refreshing sense of fun back into romance, while Love Through a Prism handled melodrama in a more impactful and emotionally resonant way, making both stand out against this title.
Another issue I had with the series is how characters sometimes deliver insights or advice too forcefully. You could argue that’s part of its tone, but it often doesn’t feel like they’ve truly earned the right to say those things. It happens fairly often throughout the series, and it can come off as a bit ungrounded.
That said, if you’re willing to overlook those flaws, it’s still a perfectly enjoyable watch. ***
The Ramparts of Ice is a nice, slow-burn, soft-melodramatic romance about characters who gradually melt each other’s emotional barriers, slowly navigating a relationship that challenges them to step outside their own walls. It’s an admirable watch, built around the quiet process of opening up, understanding others, and confronting isolation through connection.
While it may not be the strongest entry in its genre, it’s still a solid watch and a legitimate contender among this year’s romance anime lineup. ***

83/100Ramparts of ice Is a little fatty, but offers a great viewing experience to those who enjoy dramaContinue on AniListWhen the anime adaptation of You and I are polar opposites released in winter 2026, it took the internet by storm, quickly becoming one the most popular and beloved romcom anime. But most people didn’t realise that ‘You and I are polar opposites’ has a darker, more mature older sibling until it also received an anime adaptation in the same year.
People loved ‘You and I are polar opposites’ for its non dramatic, non toxic wholesome take on the romance genre, with many people being fed up with how so many modern romance anime use forced drama and miscommunication to drive their plot. The drama can feel like the untrimmed fat on a steak, just making the cut of meat chewier and harder to eat. ‘You and I are polar opposites’ is like a nice, lean filet mignon with very little fat. Ramparts of ice however, is like an incredibly heavy, super fatty, untrimmed ribeye.
The story follows Koyuki Hikawa, a socially inept high schooler who maintains a large distance between herself and everyone else. As time goes on, she slowly begins to lower her ‘ramparts of ice’ as she begins to interact with and open up to more people, with her gaining a growing friendship with her friend Miki, the basketball player Yota, and the popular boy Minato.
The tone of this anime is completely different from ‘You and I are polar opposites’. As I've said before, the story is chock so full of fat, it’s as if it’s compensating for polar opposites’ lack of drama. Where Polar opposites shows that relationships can be happy and healthy with proper communication and trust, Ramparts of Ice shows how fucked up high schooler’s social lives can actually get, packing a lot more drama and tension than polar opposites. But even so, in the rare situation where the author needs the problems solved, they still employ proper communication, which can tend to be a little surprising.
But personally, when given the option to choose between the Filet mignon and the ribeye, I'd probably choose the Filet mignon. The ribeye can sometimes feel tough and hard to eat at moments, ending up with me simply being frustrated. Despite the fact that the drama in Ramparts of ice is often pretty well done, it sometimes feels like there’s just too much. There’s drama in every episode, which is obviously sort of the appeal of this series, but it ends up feeling forced. I’m not saying drama is always bad, but it can lead to unnecessary bulk to an anime that just prolongs the plot. Some people quite like the extra fat on a ribeye, but it’s personally just not my thing.
But there is an upside to choosing the ribeye. When cooked properly, the rich juices of the cut will always provide a superior taste. I love the characters of Ramparts of ice. Where sometimes the characters of Polar opposites felt somewhat superficial, the characters of ramparts of ice have so much depth, they almost completely make up for the chewiness of the drama, to the point where I would sometimes still choose the ribeye over the filet mignon. Each member of the cast had their own backstories and reasons as to why they act the way they do. At the beginning of the series, I actually quite disliked Minato. But as they began to show the reasons he acts the way he does around people, especially Koyuki, he grew into one of my favorite characters in the show.
Even though both cuts of steak were cooked differently, they were of equal quality. Each animation style compliments their series’s tones and themes. They’re both equal in quality in my mind, with ramparts having a more mature, simpler aesthetic like a char grilled ribeye, whereas polar opposites had a more artsy, flamboyant visual style like a filet mignon that was given a pan sear, with a splash of red wine and sprigs of rosemary and thyme to add a more complex flavor than the ribeye. But that doesn’t quite mean ramparts have a worse visual aesthetic. Each visual style is simply complementary to the themes and tones of each respective series.
All things considered, Ramparts of ice doesn’t offer as smooth of an experience as the filet mignon, but sometimes, all someone wants is a giant messy, juicy slab of ribeye, and I think it fulfills this craving pretty well. I think the strengths of this series were well done, and with the second season coming out later this year, I personally look forward to the direction the show gets taken in. Given how the first season turned out, I'm looking forward to what the chefs have in store for our next course.
