DESCRIPTION
Thirty years ago, the world was nearly destroyed by the sudden appearance of unknown "invasive alien species."
Humans and these “invasive species” continue to vie for living space, and while humanity’s safety is currently barely secured, the world could be destroyed at any moment. Living in fear of death and destruction, people go about their daily lives as if trying to avert their eyes from danger and disaster.
In this world, the United Nations Hazardous Species Investigation Agency, "EXCEEDS," has begun operations to ward off crises and disasters caused by invasive species.
The story begins on the island nation of "Mizuho" in the Far East. Shina Hisase is a young invasive species extermination hunter living on a remote island. What incident will befall Shina, who wishes only to live quietly with her younger sister Setsuna, her sole remaining family member?
Note: The first episode aired with a runtime of ~48 minutes as opposed to the standard 24 minute long episode.

20/100I think it's time to apologize to ForceContinue on AniListI think it's time to apologize to Force.
Nanoha EXCEEDS exceeded the amount of stuff you can throw to a wall without anything sticking, every single part of this series sucks so much. It clearly has no passion whatsoever, this isn't a revival for Nanoha, this is a desecration of it's corpse. Given what little I've seen from the manga, EXCEEDS problem is not that Tsuzuki cannot be bothered to write anything decent anymore, but King Record and Bushiroad being so stingy that some of the old characters do not even have voices.
The old characters are so underutilized that you could remove them and you would barely be losing anything, in fact, this series would probably prefer to be an actual original show so they don't have to spend time showing Fate and Nanoha. It's actually pretty easy to find a good balance between the new characters and the old ones, after all, StrikerS exists and it did exactly that, we met new characters, they were developed, we saw them train and take on real action later on while at the same time giving a respectable amount of screen time to Nanoha, Fate and Hayate, hell, that season had the best character arc for Nanoha. EXCEEDS is too focused on doing what amounts to nothing, Shiina is the new OC who can fight against every opponent with no training whatsoever and is friends with everyone.
Eiji and Mana are the best of the new characters, which is not only not saying much, but because the show is half-baked in every single area, that means they also are underdeveloped. They have an interesting concept about some random unfulfilled guy finding this man-eating alien and having some kind of ideal platonic romance, while working towards their goal of drugging everyone. This, of course, is not explored enough because they don't have much screentime aside from their backstory episode and their battle against the main characters, they surely have more potential than what they showed. Instead, we are more focused on Towa and her gacha girlfriends, the problem with Towa's plot is very simple, this had the potential sucked out of it from the get go by making Towa become Shiina's friend from the get go, maybe I'm asking for something a little repetitive given how the other seasons were, but the formula the series has been working on was right there, they should have started as enemies, have some fights until they understand each other and then can join forces to fight against the real bad guys, but by having her becoming Shiina's friend from day 1 you get the big total of like 1 battle between them, which only happens because of a misunderstanding. Towa's gacha girlfriends are genuinely a waste of space, despite having powers they aren't relevant, but they are given more screentime than Fate and Nanoha, really, they basically did nothing aside from the one girl who can use spiders, those spiders could do so many different things all other powers look useless, I call them "gacha" because their designs look as if they were designed to appear in some new Nanoha gacha that hasn't come out yet and most likely to promote their seiyuu. Remember Signum, Vita, Shamal and Zafira? Well, they are jpgs across the entire run, they don't even have a voice and the most you can see them doing is blinking, they are probably asking for help.
Nanoha and Fate do their cameos to make old fans happy and to sell merchandise with them, but while they get some action most of it is so lifeless, Nanoha didn't even scream Divine Buster once, they cannot pay a little more to Yukari Tamura after all, they also changed Rising Heart and Bardiche's original voices, so they speak in Japanese now. I think the most offensive part of their appearance are their transformations, now, Nanoha has to put on her burqa while transforming, removing naked transformations, which had been there across the entire franchise, it's terrible, let alone the fact that it doesn't even take the time to showcase Rising Heart and Bardiche assembling themselves. Remember cartridges? They aren't even mentioned. They couldn't do a single thing right.
While Force can be considered a blight on the franchise, it at least tried to do something Nanoha, this anime is not even trying, it's so bland and half-baked that I don't think it is reviving the interest in anything aside from selling some Fate and Nanoha acrylic stands and dakimakuras.
Thank you for reading.

30/100Feeble Gasps of a Fatigued FranchiseContinue on AniList[There is no such thing as an objective review. Interpretations and opinions of all forms of art and expression are subjective.]
Barring anthologies, there are two kinds of long-running franchises:
- Ones that allow their characters to grow along with their audience.
- Ones that maintain their status quo.
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha was originally conceived as a spinoff to Triangle Heart. It easily eclipsed its progenitor, spawning a dedicated audience, and was a great deal responsible for propelling its seiyuu into superstardom. Since 2004, Nanoha has seen six seasons of television, four films, and a few manga series. Nanoha Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance is the first new television anime since ViVid Strike (2016), and that was more of a spinoff, not even bearing Nanoha’s name.
Between the end of the third consecutive season of Nanoha, StrikerS (2008) and the unsuccessful manga Magical Record Lyrical Nanoha Force (2009-2013), the franchise took a massive blow in popularity. In order to keep it alive, it received a soft reboot, beginning with the first two films that retold their respective seasons. These were followed by the subsequent film duology of Reflection and Detonation. Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance corresponds to this soft reboot. Yet despite all this, the show feels lost and confused.
Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance introduces so much newness, and that should be exciting: a new composer, fresh aesthetics that make it visually distinct from all its predecessors, even new voice actors for the beloved weapons Raising Heart and Bardiche. But most significantly, there’s a new heroine.
Shiina, a friendly neighborhood teenager, lives with her younger sister on a small island. However, their quiet town is inhabited by monsters. Shiina takes it upon herself to protect her home and those within it by hunting such beasts. When chaos and loss arrive at their door, Shiina leaves home alone and sets her noble ambitions higher.
From the very start, Shiina is front and center—the star of the show. The characters who have defined Nanoha, Fate, Hayate, and Nanoha herself, are sidelined, with pathetically little screen time and given hardly anything to do within Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance’s already bare narrative. This begs the question: Why is Nanoha’s name even in the title of this thing?
Shiina and her frenemy, Towa, are at the heart of the story…what little of it there is. Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance goes nowhere slowly, somehow managing to make a twelve episode action, sci-fi and magical girl series feel like nothing of true importance happens most of the time. Towa faces a massive monster that was once the object of her nightmares and kills it in five seconds. A bomb explodes in Shiina’s train car and she walks away with barely a scratch. Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance spends half of its time in flashbacks and has only one conflict, with nothing else going on aside from that. And most of what occurs within this singular plot is little more than old ground retreaded.
Since the very beginning, Nanoha has always had two core themes: How children can be abused and mistreated by adults, and found family. Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance maintains these, but fails to do anything new with them. Everything presented is just a much weaker version of what Nanoha has done before:
- The four Diaboli Slayers--who are completely devout to Towa due to the fact she showed them kindness--are mirrors to the Wolkenritter, down to the numbers and motivation.
- Towa was tortured at the hands of a mad scientist, and then was adopted by kind people. Both of these are two defining aspects of Fate’s character.
- The lotus eater machine visions from A’s return briefly, and the characters in question don’t even have to struggle to separate themselves from such perfect and desirable dreams.
On one hand, sure, this is thematic cohesion. On the other, it’s little more than cyclical derivativeness in the guise of a reboot. This show has nothing--absolutely nothing--to say, down to the episode titles that simply dictate their contents in the dullest, most robotic way possible. (“Kuze Shiina Origin,” “Yorumi Towa Origin,” "Jurisdiction #4’s Subway Running Extermination Battle.”) Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance wants to be something new and cool, but refuses to put the proper effort in. The shiny façade is a mask for its cowardice. This show is scared of making mistakes, scared of losing more of its fanbase, and scared to truly move forward.
Perhaps the best question to ask about _Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance_ is this: __Who is this show for?__ Barring anthologies, there are two kinds of long-running franchises. Somehow, Nanoha is caught in the crossroads and unable to decide which one to commit to. The results make Exceeds Gun Blaze Vengeance feel like the feeble, desperate, exhausted gasps of a fatigued franchise that has no idea who its audience even is anymore. This anime was made to celebrate Nanoha’s twentieth anniversary. If this is the best it can do, then perhaps it’s time to finally let Nanoha end for good.
