85/100hot, rich and slightly controlling oni guy falls in love with a regular self-insert girl with a mentally abusive familyContinue on AniListBASIC DESCRIPTION
Set in modern time with a touch of traditional family arrangements from Japan's earlier eras, this is a story with slight fantasy elements (= ogres = onis = demons from Japanese mythology, most of them seem to be traditional high-class families). The setting of the story revolves around these families and their choice of brides, which are sometimes human females. This series is clearly made for TV with a romance oriented josei audience in mind.CHARACTERS / RELATIONS
The main characters are a high-ranking oni male raised for succession and a regular 18-year old human girl from a mentally abusive family. The man declares the girl as his bride in the first episode, but the process isn't as fast for the girl. He spoils her a lot during the series, and there are a lot of sweet and romantic scenes revolving around him fawning on her. The man seems possessive and controlling, but on the other hand, he seems to take her feelings and needs into account when it matters.
The main antagonist is the girl's sister, also introduced in the first episode as a class A bi*ch. The sister is a realistic portrayal of a narcissist, and her story is deepened more towards the ending. Other characters include the girls' parents, the main servant of the oni guy, and the husband of the sister.OPINION
At first, the show seems to introduce the most typical [self-insert female MC with no merits who magically attracts platinum-tier romance interests], but they manage to flesh out her story and family troubles realistically and make her likeable through her every day family troubles. She is more on a shy side, which can be frustrating at times, but it suits this kind of overly sweet romance.A minor downside is that the man seems to be the epitome of sociopathic love, especially on the first half of the season 1, and the show tries to make this seem as admirable behaviour. This is why I thought at first that this is some sort of dom-sub fan service fulfillment, especially with some office scenes. Turns out this was just one of the nods towards a different kind of fan service (eg. like the BL reference later on). Somehow I wish they would have told more about the girls' school life, habits and life at the mansion, but I guess that would clash with the self-insertion canon which is usually what they go for in this kind of romance.
8.5 out of 10 because I wanted to drown into sickly sweet romance during lunch breaks, and it worked for that purpose. Also because the struggles and some reactions of the MC girl are a bit more interesting than compared to the usual TV romance, even though the reasoning for guy's interest is basically "it just magically happened".
RECOMMENDATION
I'd recommend this for people who want to see a smooth, feel-good romance progression, a lot of fawning over female love interest by a rich/powerful guy, or for people who have similar family problems as mentioned above. Or if you are just into hot and moody(?) demon guys. Works greatly as a 1-episode-a-day series, or for binge watching. Even with the realistic family drama, it's light enough to watch when you need a romance pick-me-up series.

50/100Married to the patriarchyContinue on AniListThe anime The Ogre’s Bride is a deceptive one, because at first glance, the series seems pretty okay. The animation is solid, the opening is good enough that I let it play through, and the story promises to be interesting. I should have known better.
Before I get into the plot, I need to say a few words about world-building.
After a war, the Ayakashi used their powers to rebuild the country and subsequently took over the elite and all leadership positions. As a result, the Ayakashi hold a special status in society. In addition to wealth and power, they’re also said to possess exceptional beauty. This last point is hard to understand, however, since all the characters in the series conform to conventional beauty standards. And because the series is aware of this, their beauty is regularly mentioned, and public appearances are staged accordingly.
But even more questionable than this social status are the so-called “brides.” They’re called this even before they’re married. For the human brides chosen by male Ayakashi, this is a great honor. Their families are financially secure, and they themselves can rise in society. The major downside is that they subsequently live in a golden cage. This is because male Ayakashi who have found their human bride for life show absolutely no consideration for their beloved’s dreams and goals. They are consistently jealous, possessive, and intrusive. The brides are expected to love them back—and they do, whether or not viewers can understand why. Age plays no role in this either. The protagonist, Yuzu, celebrates her 18th birthday with her grandparents, since her parents have eyes only for Yuzu’s little sister, Karin, and completely neglect Yuzu herself. Her grandfather gives her a dress for the occasion, which Karin immediately claims as her own when she gets home. Karin has already been chosen as the bride, is spoiled rotten, and consequently believes the world revolves solely around her. Her Ayakashi boyfriend Youta only reinforces this belief.
After the incident with the dress—which escalated because of Youta—Yuzu runs away from home.
Then, on a bridge, it happens. The magical moment: Reiya appears and instantly confesses his love. For viewers, this magical “love at first sight” moment is hard to fathom.
Luckily for Yuzu, Reiya isn’t an ordinary Ayakashi, but the future leader who unites all other Ayakashi under his command. And he’ll do everything in his power to protect her from her parents and Karin. From here on, the plot is pretty predictable.Incidentally, it’s not just the plot that lacks innovation—the character designs do as well. Humans and Ayakashi hardly differ from one another. Typical demonic features like ears, horns, tails, or other visual characteristics are completely absent.
The pacing is also on the slower side. Many scenes repeat themselves or drag on due to slow storytelling, leaving the impression by the end of the series that not much actually happened.
Yet the series does have potential in some areas. However, this potential is left untapped because the show relies far too heavily on the protagonist couple. But how well can a couple carry a plot when they come across as puppets controlled by an external force?
Instead of showing the same boring lovemaking scene between the main couple for the dozens of times by the end, I would have been much more interested in the future of the antagonist couple—Youta and Karin. I find their dynamic much more interesting, because they demonstrate that this search for a bride can be not only a patriarchal dream but also a curse—when an Ayakashi groom truly wants to or must fulfill his wife’s every wish and thereby becomes mentally dependent on his human bride, even though he knows it’s a mistake and that he’s jeopardizing his future. The series is also inconsistent in its storytelling in other ways. Yuzu only goes to school when it suits the plot. The grandparents step in when the plot calls for it. Their mascots only do their job when the dramatic effect allows it, and Yuzu’s work is only shown for as long as it’s relevant.
Added to this is the series’ unintentional comedy. It simply fails to recognize its own tone. An absurd misunderstanding on Yuzu’s part—again, it’s incomprehensible how she even came up with the idea in the first place—is taken dead seriously, while I, as a viewer, am waiting the whole time for the joke.
The characters also lose their seriousness when they aren’t treated the way the series actually dictates. My conclusion is modest. I wouldn’t recommend the series, and if you do watch it, please do so with an awareness of the patriarchal mindset that this series represents.
