15/100Maybe it's perfect for a vampire anime to be so drainingContinue on AniListI originally read the manhwa years and years ago. To say the least, I thought it was torture. However, this anime brought the torture to life.
I've read a decent amount of vampire stories, and I just wish some of them would have received an anime adaptation instead of this. For instance, the manhwa Olgami. However, instead of something with actual substance, they decided to adapt the Y/N and CEO sort of manhwa. At least, that's how my friend described it, and I completely agree with her! Now that's not what it is, but it certainly gives off those vibes.
What I dislike most about it is the female lead, Sooha. She's incredibly dramatic and a Mary Sue. She's just not likable because she's simply a self-insert. Everything she did frustrated me, and overall, she was just plain boring. As for Heli, he just felt like the oh-so-grand, powerful alpha sort of dude. Neither of them had substance; they just existed for the sake of the story.
The romance feels incredibly stiff. I wrote a vampire story when I was ten years old, and this reminds me of it. They just are forced to fall in love, and all the men must love the woman because...well...because! That's exactly how this anime felt. All the characters, their romance, and the story just felt soulless.
As for the animation, it wasn't bad or anything, it just wasn't good. The character design was eh, the animation was average, and overall I just didn't really like the style. I thought it was just sort of ugly.
From what I remember, I believe this anime was faithful to the manhwa. I just wish more manhwas with stronger plots would receive adaptations, especially ones that are basically shoujo.
Now, admittedly, this is the sort of anime I probably would've loved in middle school. It has a rather mundane, average, magic school sort of plot.
Now this anime was fun to watch with my friend and my sister. You know when something is so stupid that it's sort of good? This was sort of like that. Although on my own, I would never watch this. There was nothing to keep me engaged. Usually I'd stick around for the vampire stuff because I LOVE vampires, but alas...they weren't even hot. Really! I watched all of Vampire Knight! Yet I couldn't even get through this.

25/100An interesting premise buried beneath unfocused storytelling, uneven pacing, and too many underdeveloped characters.Continue on AniListGoing into Dark Moon: The Blood Altar, I honestly had no idea what I was about to watch. Based on the promotional material and the little information I had, I assumed it would be something similar to Twilight or just another typical supernatural romance. It wasn't until very recently that I discovered the series is actually based on the story and lore surrounding a K-pop group, and once I learned that, many aspects of the show suddenly started to make a lot more sense. The heavy focus on the group dynamics, the way the characters interact with one another, and certain story decisions all became much easier to understand when viewed from that perspective.
Unfortunately, understanding where the series comes from didn't necessarily make me enjoy it more.
The first major issue is the pacing, which feels very strange throughout the entire season. There are simply too many characters, and most of them never receive enough development to become truly interesting. Because of that, it becomes difficult to emotionally invest in the story or care about what is happening to many of the cast members. The series constantly introduces new elements and relationships, but rarely spends enough time exploring them in a meaningful way.
The one aspect that genuinely caught my attention was the twist involving the true identities of the characters and Sooha's role within the story. That reveal was easily the highlight of the season for me and was probably the moment where the show became truly interesting. For a brief period, it felt as if the story had finally found a compelling direction and was ready to fully explore its mysteries.
Sadly, that feeling didn't last.
The biggest problem with Dark Moon: The Blood Altar is that it never seems entirely sure about what kind of story it wants to tell. At times it presents itself as a romance, then suddenly shifts toward action or supernatural drama, only to move back again without fully committing to any of those elements. As a result, the narrative often feels messy, inconsistent, and unfocused. Instead of creating an interesting blend of genres, the series ends up feeling as though it is constantly changing directions without a clear identity.
I also believe the story would have benefited greatly from being much shorter. In my opinion, this could have worked far better as a compact four-episode series rather than a full season. A shorter format would have forced the writers to focus on the most interesting aspects of the plot and eliminate a lot of material that ultimately feels unnecessary.
Another factor that affected my experience is that, since I'm not familiar with the K-pop group that inspired the series, I never felt particularly invested in the characters or their relationships. I can easily imagine longtime fans of the group enjoying this much more than I did because they already have an emotional connection to these characters. For viewers like me, however, the series offers very little to become attached to.
I ultimately finished the show because I rarely abandon TV shows once I've started them, but I can't honestly say that I enjoyed the experience very much.
I would only recommend Dark Moon: The Blood Altar to dedicated fans of the group behind it, and even then, I'm not entirely convinced that everyone will enjoy what the series has to offer.
