50/100Anatomy of a 5/10 animeContinue on AniList
Whenever a show gives us a certain emotion we've never really discovered within ourselves, or is a technically impressive presentation, we'd normally give it a high rating, such as an 8, 9, or a perfect 10/10, depending on how attached we are to the art form. The opposite is also true: when a work makes us react disgustingly or is technically offensive, we'd give it a low score of 3, 2, or, in harsher cases, a 1.
Though these scores are at polar opposites from each other, one thing's for certain: these works gave us strong feelings about the art form we watch, no matter how good or bad they are.
I advocate that even when a show is rated astronomically low, it's still worth watching because of the specific emotions the show gave its audience. But what if your show isn't necessarily bad, but not particularly good either? What if, after binging your series, it just doesn't evoke any form of emotion once the credits roll?
If that's the case, welcome to the world of 5/10 anime. And one in particular this season that perfectly encapsulates that 5/10 energy is this anime, Rich Girl Caretaker.
We follow the character of Itsuki Tomonari, who gets caught up in an unfortunate affair involving the Konohana estate, particularly Hinako Konohana. After some progression, Itsuki is appointed as Hinako's caretaker for the foreseeable convenience of the Konohana family.
From that plot alone, it's pretty typical for those car-crash romcoms, especially in light novels, where a ridiculous synopsis would often turn into something heartfelt. And this is what this anime, I think, is trying to do.
Over the course of the episodes, we move far away from the ridiculousness and into something that's slice-of-life-y, with a pinch of fanservice and a constant stir of clichés, particularly surrounding the side characters in this series.
Apart from its minor gripes, this anime doesn't produce anything that's offensive or anything that sticks out like a sore thumb. There are romantic quips, but nothing that commits to the romance. There's comedy that, at best, gets a chuckle. There's this high school setting that's unapologetically ordinary despite its extraordinary plot.
I guess that's the best way I can describe this series: it's too ordinary for its own good. It doesn't take any risks and plays off clichés. The animation is… serviceable at best. The character designs and personalities are ones that you'll easily mistake for another anime. And you just finish watching this with neither frustration nor awe, nor any plot that sticks with you in a satisfying way.
All in all, it's a safe anime that doesn't stray away from taking risks. It only exists for the sake of existing, and you'll probably forget about it once the next roster of seasonals airs. ***
Rich Girl Caretaker caters to fans of romance anime, which is right up my alley. But even for someone as easily gullible as me when it comes to anything this genre serves, this one just has no spice or flavor.
Truly a “mid” anime, where it's nothing special, nor is it disastrous enough to be remembered for. ***
